Someone that stopped trying 3 years ago doesn't usually turn it back on.

See how he handles not being the main PP guy.

The biggest problem with OEL, and always has been, is his decision making. The guy makes some of the dumbest plays you're ever going to see. I always called him the one-percenter when I was at Coyotes games. He loves to try to make the 1% play, which routinely ends up in the back of your net. He'll score you some points, but you can't fix stupid. This one is going to hurt in the long run.

So the cap ends up being a wash with the Canucks taking on 12M, which is what they shipped out.

7 of it will be all but dead cap space in the near future.

This contract specifically is decent though.

I just don't see him signing with another team. He's got a great City there in Vancouver, he's got the Sedins looking out for him, now he's got another Swedish veteran in OEL to lean on.

Plus Swedes just seem like the loyal type or just happy to be playing for one team and there's a strong Swedish tradition with the Canucks.

It takes a bit of selfish type to actually sign an offer sheet. Kesler comes to mind.

Have you seen the Flames roster? Sweden 2.0 over here. Petey and Markstrom were also very close when they were in Vancouver. Edler leaving Vancouver after so many years as well.

This is indeed reasonable, and yet still exacerbates their cap issues. They've now traded 12 mil in cap this year for OEL and Garland, who together are 12.2M in cap. So they got rid of all their bad contracts and lost cap space in exchange for one good contract and one bad one.

If someone does offer sheet Pettersson (which I don't think will happen because no one ever offer sheets anyone), they'll still match, but it'll just cause further problems because it's going to be closer to $10M AAV than $7MAAV. They need it to come in under 7.5.

Or Garland... 90% of Garland's points come from below the hash marks, either behind the net or right outside the crease. Look at how many of these highlights are passes from around or below the goal line:

Which is one reason this deal is risky. He's a tiny dude who gets hit a lot because he goes to the tough areas constantly. It's commendable, if you're a coach you love that a player is willing to do that... but how long can you keep doing that when you're that small? Especially as you approach 30?

Maybe the last year or two, but that's pretty much any deal that takes some ufa years

But the first 3 years in his 25-27 age range should get some higher value than the contract

Not looking forward to him lighting up the Flames the next 5 years he will be a real thorn in our side for people who haven't seen him play. I wish Brad would have made it happen (im sure he called), would have really thrived under Sutter. Just the thought of a Tkachuk - Backlund - Garland line gets me excited, but alas....Seems like we are always the Bridesmaid.

I think Vancouver really is a team to watch out for, I think Benning has had a great off season for the most part, I really like their mix. I think they will be a force in the Pacific... Flames have their work cut out for them I think this season.

Good top 6 but no bottom 6 and a terrible defense
