Yeah but both had special circumstances.
With ROR, he was holding out for a long time and missed most of the season.
For Aho, they were dealing with a notoriously cheap owner.
I don't think the Pettersen situation is close to those right now.

Shea Weber seemed pretty happy in Nashville. It's all about business at the end of the day and agents will push their clients to sign.

I just don't see him signing with another team. He's got a great City there in Vancouver, he's got the Sedins looking out for him, now he's got another Swedish veteran in OEL to lean on.
Plus Swedes just seem like the loyal type or just happy to be playing for one team and there's a strong Swedish tradition with the Canucks.
It takes a bit of selfish type to actually sign an offer sheet. Kesler comes to mind.
|
A player that signs an offer sheet does not always do so on the hope or expectation that they will be playing for a new team. It is a negotiating pressure-point. As you pointed out, I believe that Aho signed his with the full expectation that Carolina would match.
Dim Jim Benning has already publicly announced that the Canucks will match any offer, so even if Pettersson is intent on playing out his prime years in Vancouver, why wouldn't he leverage this option to get a higher AAV or a longer term? Given the Canucks's current cap-crunch, I would bet that the offers on the table from their side are all bridge deals. If Pettersson wants term, then this is sure a good way to go about getting it.

He was on a 45 point pace two seasons ago, and a 65 point pace last season. I think $5M is right in line with his production if you look at the $100k per point math that tends to hold true in these scenarios.
I would have had no issue giving Garland this contract, and it's more likely it ends up being good value instead of a bad contract.
Hell Sam Bennett just got $4.4M for having a good 10 game stretch. $5M isn't that big of a contract anymore. A $5M contract today is the equivalent of a $2.4M contract when the salary cap first came into effect in 05/06.

I seriously doubt it.

Agreed. This is a good contract that is right in line with current NHL inflation. I think a lot of posters get sticker-chock by imagining that $5.0 m can still buy a top line player. Those days are long gone.

Let Seattle offersheet Pettersson, we offersheet Hughes...and the Vancouver rivalry will hit new levels...

Pretty much what I thought he’d get. I’d be pretty pumped if the Flames signed him to that deal.

Lol at the way too much money takes here.
Canucks just signed the Yotes second best forward whose just entering his prime years for 5 years. I believe he was on pace for 70 points last season on a offensively challenged team.
I think this contract will end up as a steal.

Hughes can't be offer sheeted I think.
If he could, the Devils would be first in line.

Good signing for the Canucks, Benning trying to make up for the sh*tshow garbage GM he was last year. Would have liked Garland on the Flames for sure.

Who is Garland going to play with? Can't see him knocking Boeser off the top line. Coming close to a PPG is highly unlikely.

Bo and Hog.
He will get PP time as well being a right hand shot.

Well, no. He was not.
And I don't see how this gets much better for him—moving from one terrible, offensively challenged team to another one.

I don't know about that. The reality is that the Canucks had to take on OEL to get Garland so there's $13 million annually tied up in Garland and a declining OEL for the next five seasons. Garland IMO isn't good enough to offset the negative of adding OEL.

Then he ain't getting a PPG. As a division rival, I like that line. Two small wingers that do their best work on the outside? Sign me up.

OEL sounded rejuvenated in his interview, talked about proving ppl wrong about him and talked about the talent that's on the team. Wouldn't surprise me if he bounces back. the biggest issue with him in Arizona was his effort according to yote fans.
If he regains his form, 7m is not that bad considering what Jones got lol.
