I think what annoys me most about this is you’re talking about insults when you’ve just insulted the entire board, insulted people who have been subjected to actual hate for how they were born, and did so to distract from people talking about racism in hockey and what Ethan Bear went through and instead put the focus elsewhere.

That’s pretty brutal to me, even if unintentional.

Never occurred to me that Bear is indigenous. Does that make me stupid?

It gets mentioned a lot on TV but I wouldn't say it makes you stupid.

Completely un-related. One of his uncles is absolutely hilarious on FB.

Pretty gross that people would resort to racist attacks to bear. It’s just a game for ####s sake.

Somehow I never heard it or it didn't register. Never occurred to me.

Nope. Probably means you just aren't a huge fan of pre-season.

He got to play us with his name in Cree.

Good on Bear for standing up. It would have been easier to just pretend that it didn't happen. Takes character to face stuff like this head on, but that's only 50%. The next 50% comes from each one of us to bridge that gap and stand up with him in saying that there is no place in this world for racism.

I just can't buy an Ethan Bear jersey, but I do hope that he either gets traded somewhere else or gets really good and makes team Canada. A Cree syllabic Bear jersey is special in my mind. Just wish I could tolerate those colours.

Well, Boston sports fans don't have the greatest rep on these fronts either...

I was going to suggest a Seattle Thunderbirds WHL jersey but they use Canucks colours

I'll echo what I said in the E=NG thread. Sure laugh at Bear (or any other rival player) for making a bad play and getting scored on. That's what rivalry is all about. But to then spew hatred at him over his skin color and culture? F'ing BS.

Racism is still alive and well in Canada, we should never forget that. An uncomfortable show of 'proof' is how these racist POS come out of the woodwork anytime someone of color has the spotlight on them. I feel bad for Bear, but that was about as classy a response as it gets. Can only imagine how much crap he has gone through in his life to get to where he is. And now certain 'fans' of his team spew that crap all over him.

Disgusting. People that post stuff like that that need to be publicly named and shamed because it seems like that's the only way to hold people accountable these days.

Fixed, Edmonton is full of hicks and idiots, a fanbase that takes out thousands of $$$ in billboards to get presidents and GM's fired. I have a hard time believing fans of other Canadian teams would pull the kind of BS that we've seen in Edmonton.

garbage "fix"
save it for the E=NG thread.

Hate Edmonton all you want, but in a thread about racism, be honest and fair.

Edmonton doesn't have any more racist idiots than any other town or city in this province, including Calgary. all the bad jokes aside you can't honestly believe otherwise. there is enough proof out there.

I don't think there are more than a small handful on CP, but in general there is no higher moral ground for any community.

Unfortunately, I think it was a bit of a fairytale in the early social media days that anonymity was behind a lot of hateful comments and behaviour. It really appears that we actually have a large portion of society that is happy to say horrible things with their name and smiling picture all over it.

What we've seen is perpetual growth in these comments and actions as negative and ugly comments get huge reactions which gives people a dopamine hit. But they also get support from other horrible people, which emboldens more to join the group, and allows it to keep growing.

I didn't know, either, but I don't really look that closely at players, so I generally only recognize stars and Flames.

The name itself sounded European to me.

Racists are everywhere and there's a lot of them. There are a lot of good people in Calgary for example and I used to think that racists were a small minority but I think I've changed my view on that.

Just go on any news site where people can comment and see for yourself. I've noticed on CBC news that they don't open some stories to comments anymore. MSN also recently opened their news stories to comments and it's the same thing.

I also didn't really know a lot about Ethan Bear but knew he was Indigenous, seems like a good guy to me. He could probably trash talk back to the racists a lot better too but he's to classy, the guy made it to the NHL!

It wasn't a billboard, but Canuck fans paid to fly a banner with #fireBenning around the lower mainland

Good to know that if we can just fix the racism and bigotry in Edmonton the problem will be solved nation wide.
If we are going to paint an entire city with the opinions of a small percentage of fans, I guess Calgary is full of racists too, just read yesterdays local news.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the comments were made online so the "fans" could be from Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer, etc.. Could also be 12 years old's who are idiots and think it's funny, we just assume these are adults.

As stated earlier by others, the whole E=NG thing wears pretty thin in a thread about racism, equating this issue to Edmonton alone should be embarrassing to the posters
