I am guessing Hanifin's shoulder was seperated a couple weeks ago on that awkward hit, he decided to play through, when he went to hit Perry he fully separated his shoulder, which caused his knees to buckle and he went down hard and hit his head.
Fills in the holes for me on why he hit the ice so hard.

Nesterov or Kylington will start in Valimakis spot who will be bumped up to Hanifins.
Mackey may very well get the call though because he has actually been playing a lot of minutes...but you would think he would have been recalled by now and Im sure Sutter wants to see him in pracyice a few times before putting him in a game.
Just brutal for Noah and the team though. Most consistent Dman from day 1 of the season.

Typically, no surgery for separated shoulder though. Unless the second one tore ligaments.

I always liked how Noah Hanifin is ahead of McDavid in games played.
Even with this injury, Hanafin will have quite a bit of space on this claim.

Connor Mackey is not in the lineup for the Heat today.
First game he's missed all season.

It was a tale of two seasons for Hanifan. Under Ward he was over focused on the defensive game and contributed nothing offensively. He's not the best shooter of the puck, but a guy with his size who can move like him still should be able to jump in and add something. Just before Sutter took over, and while Daryl was coaching he was getting into the offence a lot more and contributed a fair bit more. I think he only had like 3 assists in his first 22 games which I noted as being Mind Bottling at the time.
Hope he get's right, and we see a lot more of the Hanifin who was close to 0.5 points per game all of next year. Regardless of how the expansion draft plays out, him, Anderson, and Valimaki all need to take steps forward next year. Hanifin at times played like the player the team needs...he needs to be that guy all year next year. The other two frankly have to be a hell of a lot better, especially Anderson who really fell on his face this year.

Huge loss for sure.
I wonder if sportsnet will have a special on his injury and his battle back from it.

OK...but Stone wont be getting more minutes ahead of Tanev or Andersson, unless he switches sides or one of those two are demoted/limited ice.
Tanev played the 2nd most minutes of his career Saturday...so i suspect both he and Gio get a few more and Valimaki/Kylington to pick up the rest.

Sucks but the Flames have been relatively healthy all season.

Hanifin went from potential trade chip to key piece of the team moving forward. Hope this isn’t a 6 month recovery type injury.

Shades of 2015 when Giordano (Flames best defenceman at the time) went down for the stretch drive and playoffs. That was a long time ago, but still a number of players on both teams. Maybe this 2021 team responds as well as the 2015 team?

I think this injury is much easier to manage than if Tanev, Markstrom or any of our top 6/7 forwards got injured.
It sucks but the group should be able to make up his minutes.
Between Gio, Tanev, Valimaki, Stone and Andersson we still have a solid top 5 to lean on.

I bet Kylington has been thrown in to every single trade proposal by Treliving as a sweetener to get a deal done in the past 3 years.
He cleared waivers too earlier this year and it's not like his salary is prohibitive to any team. If a team liked him enough, all they had to do was send down another low cap hit player.
I like the skillset on the player too, but I think coaches feel he makes too many bad decisions.
I think back to one of his more "productive" games under Sutter. He made a rush down the ice and threw it out in front of the net and it snuck through a few legs and on to the stick of a Flame who scored.
Lots of people on this board and media praised the play and cited it as an example of a great play by Kylington. But to most coaches, that is a play that a defenseman should not do. It is a low percentage play that most of the time ends up being an odd man rush the other way. As fans, we see the end result and think "see, he's a good player" but coaches view it as "he got lucky, 9 out of 10 times, that play goes the other way and ends up in our net".
If Kylington is scoring a point per game, I think you will find a coach who will tolerate those kind of high risk plays, but it's hard for him to get the opportunity to put up points without taking those risks. It's a chicken and egg thing.
He's a guy who really needs to go on a rebuilding team and the reins just have to be let loose on him. Let him be a 4th forward, score a bunch of points and trade him to maximize value. Which is what the Blackhawks did with Erik Gustaffson.
