I always dreamed as a kid if I have got the NHL Stats and Record Book and then travelled back in time to get the Flames to draft Mike Bossy, Ray Bourque, Denis Potvin, Pete Peters, Marcel Dionne, Cam Neely and all those great players. Kinda like Biff in Back to the Future.
This thread reminds me of those dreams of a 12 year old.

I've put way too much thought into stuff like that. Travel back to 00/01, which is where my hockey knowledge starts. Find a way to contact somebody important in flames ownership and use 9/11 prediction, plus Iginla's Hart loss to convince them that I know what I'm talking about. Hopefully I can do that before we lose Savard and St Louis, otherwise wait for the 03 draft to start taking action. Even without a stats book, there's a lot of great players you can find by name recognition alone.
Begin by trading down to get an extra 2nd round pick, drafting Getzlaf in the first, Bergeron and Weber in the 2nd, followed by Lee Stempniak, Brad Richardson, Joe Pavelski, Dustin Byfuglien and Brian Elliot. Just that by itself gives us three centers better than anybody Iggy played with here, and two top tier D. I know that there are some other good choices I could have made with a stat book, but this is what I got from memory.
After 03 I assumed we would be going deep in the playoffs every year, so didn't pick any player that was drafted in the first round. Continuing this process for a few more years, this is the roster I could ice for the start of 10/11 (assuming the GM made the cap work)
Continuing the same process for a few more years gives me the 2016-2017 roster. No way we can keep the team under the cap, but I'm sure we could get some kids on ELCs to fill the gap.
Then I kept going all the way to this year. It's crazy how many stars go late in the draft.
Anyway, that's my journey through magical time travel fantasy land.
