I don't think that was the reason Fox wouldn't have signed in Calgary.

Yes, this is a fantasy exercise. Notice the "My Flames Roster?" It's similar to those who make proposals in the trade rumors thread. Like, Bennett, Monahan and 1st aren't getting you Jack Eichel. It's all fantasy.

The question I'm asking isn't necessarily who the Flames should have selected, it's more so, who the Flames would have selected if say they didn't trade for Dougie Hamilton or Travis Hamonic.

I mean really, it's a fact that the Flames' had a draft list ranking and it's a fact that they would've picked someone if they had that draft pick. Would they have selected Barzal? Maybe not. Would they have selected Thomas Chabot? Maybe not. Maybe they would've selected a bust, who knows. But it would've been somebody and since I don't know who, i think it's fun to guess who it would've been and to see what this roster could've potentially looked like.

Again, I'm not asking who the Flames should've selected in hindsight, It's more about who the Flames would've selected had they owned their draft pick. Fact is, the Flames execs had a draft list, who was available at 15 to them? Who would they have selected at 45 and at 52 and so forth.

It's not like I took Sam Bennett out and replaced him with Ehlers or Pastrnak.

Imagine if Boston took the next 3 picks with those 3 1st rounders in a row in '15. Barzal, Connor, Chabot instead of Zboril, Debrusk, Senyshyn. They seem to be powering though that potential loss well enough, and that's just one round of one draft.

It was a big part of it. It's also why he passed on the Canes.

Can we start this thread, but Edmonton edition?

Huberdeau, Schiefele, Couturier, or Landeskog over RNH
Tkachuk over Puljujarvi
Ellis over Paajarvi
Reilly over Yakupov

Let’s add some trades to the mix:
Hall for Larsson
Eberle for Strome
1st Rounder (Barzal) for Reinhart
Schultz for 3rd rounder
Cagguila for Manning

Hall - McDavid - Draisaitl
Tkachuk - Barzal - Eberle
Caggiula - Schiefele - Yamamoto
Chiasson - Khaira - Kassian

Ellis - Reilly
Nurse - Schultz
Bear - Barrie

I think it had more to do with the fact that he was born and raised in New York and played college in New England; but this is make believe land so...

Again, this isn’t what I’m asking and it’s probably the reason for all the consternation. I’m not saying who Flames should’ve picked instead of Bennett, Hunter Smith, Keegan Kanzig and etc. It’s about the picks the Flames traded away and what they could’ve made from that. As in, I only listed 8 total picks, who would the Flames had selected with those 8 picks? Or the question I’m actually asking is who would you have selected because it’d be interesting to know if you would’ve picked Chabot of instead of Barzal or Carter Hart instead of Debrincat?

Similar situation for the Oilers, they traded 2 picks away for Griffin Reinhart. Had they made the 2 selections instead maybe they could’ve had Barzal and Aho or maybe not. It’s not about what each team should’ve picked in hindsight, it’s more about the team you might have had, if you didn’t rush rebuilds.

There’s too much butterfly effect to carry out this exercise.

Man, this place just can't allow anything fun to interfere with our constant depression and self-loathing about being Flames fans.

As well, the reading comprehension issues continue unabated.

If the Flames didn't sign Jankowski, who was clearly a disappointing pick, they would have received a compensation pick in 2017 - a 2nd rounder at #51.

I always dreamed as a kid if I have got the NHL Stats and Record Book and then travelled back in time to get the Flames to draft Mike Bossy, Ray Bourque, Denis Potvin, Pete Peters, Marcel Dionne, Cam Neely and all those great players. Kinda like Biff in Back to the Future.

This thread reminds me of those dreams of a 12 year old.

I think it's interesting and fun to look back to think what could have potentially been if we kept the picks. People are taking this way too seriously.

I always think about this. They could have been so stacked.

What’s striking about the Hamonic, Hamilton and Elliott trades is that these were off season trades for draft picks. Those clubs were willing to accept draft capital in return for players who no longer fit with what they were trying to achieve. This wasn’t dumping pending UFA’s at the deadline.

Short term pain for long term gain.

Can you imagine a roster full of these players.. coached by GG.
I think I prefer the way it turned out.. nobody needs a 12 pack of Bennetts.

Yeah, I was wondering about this: if the Flames had committed earnestly to building through the draft, then how would that have affected coaching hires? With lower expectations in 2018 would Gulutzan have earned himself an extension?

This is why I still have EA Sports NHL 15. You have no idea how many iterations I’ve put this team through in Be A GM, what do you want you know?

Spoiler!

How about this one: if Burke wasn't too stubborn to trade Cammalleri at the '14 deadline, even if he could only get a 2nd or a 3rd.

He still makes terrible picks of McDonald, Smith, and Hickey...but he has one more bullet in the chamber to spend on a hometown kid named Brayden Point.

Hard to imagine that Cammalleri off the roster makes enough difference for the Flames to drop 10 pts and finish below the Oilers...though Cammi did have 4 GWG after the TDL ...actually he had 13G 24P in the 20gp after the deadline. Pts in every Flames win except 1.

So maybe we would have moved up to the 3OA slot...and drafted Sam Bennett instead of Draisaitl.
