I'm with you. Not sure how this is a win for Pittsburgh. Kessel lead the playoffs in scoring during first cup run and put up 40 and 80 with Toronto by himself. What had Galchenyuk ever done and if guys like skinner get 9 mil are the pens going to fork out 7 or more for galchenyuk? Terrible deal for Pittsburgh

Plus control of an asset for Arizona. I like this for Arizona. If Galy was walking at end of season it’s better for them to make the hard decision now. I think Arizona comes out ahead here.

So taking a look at the Coyotes' roster...

Clayton Keller - Nick Schmaltz - Phil Kessel
Carl Soderberg - Derek Stepan - Michael Grabner
Christian Dvorak - Barrett Hayton - Vinnie Hinostroza
Conor Garland - Brad Richardson - Christian Fischer
Lawson Crouse

Oliver Ekman-Larsson - Jason Demers
Jakob Chychrun - Niklas Hjalmarsson
Jordan Oesterle - Alex Goligoski
Ilya Lyubushkin

Antti Raanta
Darcy Kuemper

Man... that roster looks really good. Tons of upside. I think Chayka has done a tremendous job.

You don't think so? That's one of the best defense/goaltending sides in the whole league, for my money. The forwards just got a huge boost today. Very well-rounded, deep group.

I think that team makes the playoffs, easily.

Maybe I'm completely out of the loop but I have no idea who their 1st and 3rd line centres are...Plus their bottom 6 is very meh.

I think you might need to take a closer look... (I watched over 50 Coyotes games last yr)

The Coyotes' team defense was 5th in the league last year, allowing just 220 goals.

Their save-percentage was 6th in the NHL.

Now they've added a point-per-game winger who scored 41 more points than Galchenyuk did last year. Nick Schmaltz will be healthy; he scored at a 67-point pace with Arizona last year, which is high, but he looked electric with Keller when he wasn't injured. Keller gets to play with those two guys, having already recorded a 65-point rookie season. They also added Soderberg, who just scored 49 points last year, and Derek Stepan is probably one of the best all-around 2Cs in the Western Conference.

Hayton was a top-5 pick last year who just finished 3rd in the OHL in points/game. Grabner led the NHL in shorthanded scoring. Dvorak was injured for most of last year but scored 15 goals twice before his age-21 season ended. Hinostroza scored 16 goals and 39 points last year despite playing barely over 15 minutes a night. Brad Richardson scored 19 goals and is their 4C. Garland scored 13 goals in 47 games, a 23-goal pace, and is blazing fast.

Amazingly, Christian Fischer probably has the least upside of anyone in that main forward group, and he's still just 22 and a formerly highly-touted prospect who scored 11 goals last year in a limited role.

The Coyotes missed the playoffs by just two wins last year despite losing over 500 man-games to injury. Without that apocalyptic injury luck, I think they'd have been a safe bet for the playoffs even without adding Soderberg and Kessel. After those additions... I think this is one of the most interesting up-and-coming young teams in the NHL.

Seems like a waste of the twilight of Kessel's prime.

He would've been best utilized on a team primed to contend with his addition, such as...yes, the Flames.

Yotes are closer than they were, but aren't going to be a team able to make a run until Kessel is no longer an impact player.

They look like a very "early season success" team until they wear down physically and mentally, bottom 6 will be toast by Christmas and neither Schaltz or Keller can play wing so the top line will eventually will be exposed as well.

Probably a bubble team as they should have early season success

Keller is a winger, Schmaltz is a centre. Don't see the issue you're illustrating. Keller rarely plays centre at the NHL level.

Also it's funny that you say that the Coyotes look like an "early-season success team" because it's almost been the complete opposite the last two seasons.

Coyotes in the first half of the season, 2017-19: 26-48-8

Coyotes in the second half of the season, 2017-19: 42-28-12

I am not sold on the Coyotes being a true contender in the pacific but they should be better than years past minus last years performance

When he does he looks dangerous, Keller on the wing looks like a deer caught in headlights, he's a natural center and should be paired with a strong winger who can take his weak side draws(like McDavid in Edmonton)

Yes, Schmaltz is a center but he's far from a #1 center

It's a stronger Coyotes team than years past, but it's far from a great team. Better than average defense, but some guys miscast in their roles (Demers on the top pairing??? yikes.)

The forwards are a hodgepodge of talent, but there is some amount of scoring ability there. Still a long way from being an offensively scary team. You still have some guys miscast in their roles and some AHL/replacement level players.

Do they have a shot at the playoffs? Yeah for sure, but I wouldn't put money on it.

demers is barely a top four, keeps finding ways to fool GMs.

Like Keller, Schmaltz should be very productive on that line assuming he can stay healthy. Big drop after that, though. Stepan's game doesn't appear to be well suited in the West.

Good trade for the Coyotes, though. Galchenyuk was pretty much invisible for them. Domi was a steep price.

I would highly doubt Kessel is potting 80+ points when moving from Crosby/Malkin to Schmaltz/Stepan.

There were more than a few posters here absolutely roasted the Canadiens for giving up someone as good as Galchenyuk for mediocrity like Max Domi. Now the Coyotes are lauded for still getting something useful for Galchenyuk before the league figures him out.

Arizona is where offensive players go to die.
