Tough to judge vets on a preseason game. Wasn’t impressed with Lindholm or Smith in the slightest but it’s just preseason and the China hangover might still be hampering them a bit. Also tough to get up for these games.
On the plus side, Dube needs to be on this team. If that means waiving Lazar to do it, you do it. That kid is good.
I also have a beautiful new James Neal retro jersey, so that makes me happy too!

Easy to put up that story after the fact
I actually find that excuse potentially suspect, and acknowledge we will never know.
The Flames were, yes, that bad late last year that any goalie on earth would appear crappy statistically, even prime Hasek. It is easy to say he wasn’t ready, in order to justify bad numbers that were not even necessarily his fault.
He didn’t look ready tonight but it’s a preseason game. Nothing to see here.
Although I was curious about why he was stretching out his groin between plays in the first. The old Flames goalie Kiprusoff, for those that remember him, was known for hours of stretching on game days.
Dube looked good again but needs to clean up the penalties
Brodano - good to see. I don’t miss Gully
Bennett as others mentioned was not noticeable.

What I am saying is our squad really fell apart after the all-star game and Smith was not able to make up for it. Our system became so obvious to everyone it was pretty easily dispatched as our coach was not willing to adjust. The outcome of that is 91.6% for Mike Smith and some of us is now throwing it in as it was him who cost us the season. Its just ridiculous.
I am watching the press conference and I really like what Peters is saying. He points out that horrible PP which took our momentum away aswell as those dumb penalties we took right after. He is slowly starting to win me over, I like when coach can do that kind of simple and clear analysis right after the game without the need to take a look at some corsi stats or whatever. Tells you he actually understands what is going on around him.

This can’t be a serious take from anyone who watched the Flames last year, can it..? Over a point per game and he was “average”. Lol.

Well maybe far-fetched, yes. But Johnny is the guy, the one who is expected to be a point-per-game player. He had a great season stat-wise, but he was not the deciding factor in tight moments far too often. How many times has he missed the OT breakaway or 2-1 and then the other team scored at the other end right after? I felt like it has to be Tkachuk to score that goal or noone else can do it. Maybe just my biased opinion.

IMO : the final candidates for cuts are going to come down to Lomberg, Hathaway, Foo, Mangipane, and Dube.
I think Dube is going to edge them all out based on production. The Glames have lacked production yhe last 12 years so thats why I give him the edge to make it in the forewards group.
On defence I think it Comes down to just 3.
Fatimus Sandwichson( still using that name because it was funny and smart) , Kulak and Valimaki.
I think Kulak will get it by the slimmest of margins but I want it to be Valimaki . I think he just has a higher skillset and sees the ice much better offensively And Defensively. I think Valimaki gets his nine games tho.
I don't know how ridged the rules are for 9 games vs AHL for Valimaki. He is 19 and turns 20 only 3 days after the Season starts maybe someone could clarify this? Seems like it could go both ways.

Was very unimpressed with Robinson, Quine, and Hathaway. Time for some cuts.
Mange looked very creative and I love dubes speed. Janko did a few things well, hope he catches fire soon though.

It was a pre-season game. My takeaways are:
- I love my new seats in Sec 215.
- I just love this section of the dome. Even though it wasn't busy, it's got a better vibe.
Adios 224.
- Dube, Foo, Valimaki, Jank and Ryan were standouts.
- Ryan had some confusion at points, but new line mates, etc. He's offensive minded.
- Gio was in top form. Just grind em win defence along with some great offensive jumps.
- Brodie looked balanced tonight. Didn't push but didn't make too many on ice errors.
- I was reading the last posts and didn't even realize Bennett was out there tonight. (Pre-season non performing fan)
- There is a lot of confusion as to how to fit Dube on the roster, I think there is no confusion.
- Dube seems to have that puck gravity luck the puck loves him and his style of play.
- Lazar is on a short leash. Didn't play this game, but I worry for him. He's physically not able to keep up with the game. We will see him over the next week, but it's decision time.
- Many people have thought there is no roster room, but in a team that is cap-heavy
wanting to win, go with the best players for now and not their draft positions or expectations.
- Hamonic - Still hasn't found his game in Calgary.
All this said, pre-season... so if I had to watch this versus the Flames 2017-2018 season, this is looking a lot better.

I know Bennett was bad, but to say he did not even play? Objective flames fans call em like they see em with Bennett.

If there's anyone who gets a pass it's Smith.
Vets who know they're in the lineup are looking to get their rhythm back and could care less about winning a meaningless game. The only thing I'm worried with him is his health.

Did not watch or see the game but that goal by Valimaki was impressive to say the least.

I watched the game and didn’t think there were a lot of players that looked great save for Mangiapane, Giordano, Dube, and Ryan, but I don’t really care.
I know people are nervous about goaltending, but I think it is for the wrong reasons. I am not terribly concerned about Smith’s preseason play, but having said that, it would be very good if he could turn in a dominating performance at the Dome the next time he plays. The biggest problem with him last year was not his play tailing off at the end of the year, it was the inexplicable disparity between how he played at home v. on the road. The Flames MUST be better in Calgary this year, and that starts with Mike Smith.
