It makes me sad that so many on CP feel that this is as good as the Flames are going to get.
The extra cap space is targeted to keeping this group together. How the heck do people foster the concept of going after Tavares when Tkachuk will be getting 6-8 M the year after next year?
How are Monahan . Gaudreau, Backlund, Gio, Hamilton, Hamonic, Stone, Smith, Frolik, Bennett, Jankowski and a higher paid Tkachuk go from a bubble team with zero depth and compete to a contender? (as it should be when spending to the cap)
Enough with the long term big bucks contracts until they are justified with some significant success as a team.
I think the Flames need to get rid of all individual performance bonuses and make them team bonuses.
Last season was all Elliot's fault, This season everyone was great except Brouwer and maybe Bennett.
Gutzlan somehow had the team on a spectacular run to make the playoffs (when the team supposedly bought into his system) and a year latter he is the worst coach in the league
This team had virtually no injuries and was never more than a point or 3 above 8th place in the conference.
news flash:
This team is worse than the last full season 2011-12 that Iginla Boumeester Jokinen, Tanguay, Stempniak missed the playoffs with 90 points and a rebuild was pretty much obviously need

$9MM for Tkachuk a 50 point winger? Yeesh.
We all love that kid and personally I think he's the kind you sign long term. Considering he is a 50 point winger with intangibles, you get him 6 or 7 years averaging about 5.5 to 6MM per. His ceiling is probably 30 and 30.

FYI he was on pace for almost 30/30 this year playing with Backlund and Frolik

I think his ceiling is higher, but I don't think he commands much more than you suggest on an extension. He is realistically a very good top-line winger, but for various reasons just does not yet have the numbers to show it.

Pending performance, slightly less than $6.75M for the first x years to align with Johnny's contract to not be higher than him and then potentially a raise for the years that follow the expiration of Johnny's deal.

I would love for him to sign for max term, but I think he will sign the same term and money contract as Johnny. I can safely say anybody that thinks he will sign for under $6 million is out to lunch

This kid’s at least a 30G guy in my eyes. I honestly don’t even think he has a ceiling, but his floor is at least 30G. Add in that he’s a 20 year old power forward with leadership written all over him, and I think negotiations start at 6M and go from there.
