Exactly. If you're rich the Southwestern United States is a great place to be.

I wonder how many people saying Switzerland have been there, or know many Swiss people. It's a very conservative, buttoned-down, conformist society. Not to mention eye-wateringly expensive.

A guy I know sold his business then moved to Malta. I've been there and have been trying to figure out why. Is it the proximity to the rest of the Med? Curious about your reasons.

I think if you lived in Calgary all your life, you would find Spain, Greece, Malta etc too blazing hot in the summer? Like +40 C hot.

I will answer, based on my own experiences.
While in the Army in the 90s, I was posted to Croatia/Bosnia for a year. Every month, I had five day's leave. I went Switzerland and rented an apartment in Lauterbrunnen. In the winter, I skied. During the Spring/Summer/Fall, I mountain-biked.
I still go to Lauterbrunnen every two years for three weeks - usually in June or September.
The apartment we rent is 80 CHF/night. Yes, transit is expensive; eating in restaurants can be expensive. But I don't find groceries to be expensive. So we make our own meals. I mitigate the transit cost by purchasing a regional rail pass that allows me to ride rail/bus/boat/most gondolas and trams unlimited times.
The Swiss seem to get a bad rap, but I have had great experiences with all I have encountered. From the young lady who helped us in the Bern train station, to the bike shop owner in Lauterbrunnen who talked about the Calgary Olympics, to the lady who worked at the coffee shop on the Schilthorn who sat down and chatted with us, to the young woman who rode the Gondola with us in Grindelwald, they have all been friendly and interested in conversing with us.
That being said, I can't move there, even if I want to.

Have a friend that moved back to Calgary from Switzerland where she lived for seven years. Said the place is beautiful but the corporate culture is tough for women, still a male centric place and was hard to advance. She said it would be great to vacation there again though.

NZ or AUS - could probably sink into life in Costa Rica as well. Give me the ocean and a right hand beach barrel and I'll be just fine thanks.

I think the biggest problem for me with Calgary, is that its downtown core is dead, the urban sprawl and the lack of culture.
That is what really attracts me to Europe in general, that city centers are town centers are filled with life, bakers, small stores, so much culture and social interaction.
North American cities are pretty much designed to isolate and keep people in their large homes away from socializing with each other.

Stay in Canada first,

Any Nordic countries third.
Don't think I could do without winter or the forest.

Wouldn't want to leave Canada but Wyoming is tempting. Any state along the Rockies really...
Moving to Montana soon, gonna be a dental floss tycoon.

Why do Afghans, Pakistanis and Moroccans want to live in Saudi Arabia? What an insanely odd choice. Oh, Bangladeshis too! WTF?

Flames games start at 3-4 in the afternoon here most of the time so it's easy enough to follow along!

Antarctica, to get as far away as possible from all you ####ers. If I got to the south pole I could walk 50 feet in any direction to get into the appropriate time zone.
