I think the Flames defense has to win a few rounds in the playoffs before getting crowned the best.
I'd give the crown to Nashville right now.
There was too much greatness heaped upon the Flames defense when they had Phanuef, Regher, and Bo that they failed to bring home. I see a big improvement coming this season, but they need to prove it with playoff wins.

3) Nashville - Solid D but I think the system and Rinne really propels them to be statistically the best D core.
4) Minnesota
5) San Jose

Absurd to put Calgary ahead of Nashville. Especially with Hamonic not having a game for Calgary yet.

How I see things:
1) Nashville: Top four is ridiculous, and depth guys aren't complete blackholes.
2) Calgary: Also a ridiculous top four, but a bit behind in depth.
3) Anaheim: Solid top four but they really need Montour to step in. Bieksa is absolutely awful.
4) Minnesota: Scandella's departure will hurt if Dumba doesn't step up his development.
5) San Jose: Incredible 1-2 punch, but way too top heavy.
Ducks have:
One #1 (Lindholm)
One #2 (Fowler)
One #3 (Manson)
One #4 (Vatanen)
Two anchors (Bieksa and Holzer)
One great prospect (Montour)
Flames have:
Two #1s (Giordano and Hamilton)
Two #3s (Brodie and Hamonic)
One #5 (Stone)
One anchor (Bartkowski)
One okay prospect (Kulak)
Predators have:
One #1 (Subban)
Two #2s (Ekholm and Josi)
One #3 (Ellis)
One #5 (Emelin)
Two #6s (Irwin and Weber)
Sharks have:
Two #1s (Burns and Vlasic)
One #4 (Martin)
Two #5s (Dillon and Braun)
An anchor (Demelo)
Unknown 7th D
Wild have:
One #1 (Suter)
One #2 (Spurgeon)
One #4 (Brodin)
Two #5s (Dumba and Quincey)
One #7 (Murphy)
Uknown 7th D

The Winnipeg Jet's D-core looks good on paper, but it's hard to say without a real goaltender backing them up.
I would say Nashville now, and then Carolina in a few years.

How is Columbus not in people's top 5 but SJ is?
Seth Jones
Jack Johnson
Zach Werenski
Ryan Murray
David Savard
Markus Nutivaara
I'd take that over SJs 6.

Yeah, if Josi isn't a number one I don't know who is. Arguably better than Subban.

I still think Nashville is the strongest D in the league at the moment. Their top 4 is ridiculously good.
Organizationally, I think the Flames are better. Stone is better than any of their D outside the top 4, and then the organizational depth through the prospect base is also stronger. Calgary MAY put out the best 6 man unit in the league this year. However, the proof is in the pudding, and they will have to get the job done this year. Until then, I would rank Calgary below Nashville and Anaheim this year at least. Top 5 for sure, arguably top 3.
It is funny how arguably the 5 best defence cores are all in the west. I expect the Canes to make jumps in the standings every year in the east as their core matures. They have a tonne of young talent there.
I am really eager to see how Calgary's defence shapes up with having Stone all year and now Hamonic. Add-in Elliott who is a strong puck mover (and a good goalie, which helps!), and it definitely makes things a heck of a lot more interesting. Something tells me that I am going to absolutely love Calgary's transition game this year, and it should give Nashville a run for their money at least.

Hamilton is a #1 Dman and Josi is a #2?
Josi was 5th in Norris Trophy voting in both 2014-15 and 2015-16. He's not only a #1 Dman, but one of the best in the league.

Pretty much agree....
I'd have the Flames at two 1s, a 3, a 4, a 4/5, 6/7 and a 7
but we're on the same page.
The big thing is Hamonic. If he fits in and helps Brodie become a true 3 or even a 2/3 (with himself a 3/4) then the Flames could very well be the defence core in the league.
If Hamonic struggles though, doesn't help Brodie and plays to the 5 range then the Flames are back to one elite pairing and two upgraded lesser pairings.
I think he'll rebound, but he's the key.
The good news is options. If someone goes down the Flames will have Stone to move up, plus hopefully some faith in Kulak so that by February Gulutzan sees him as a fill in as well.

Best defense? Edmonton Oilers. Just ask them. The best defense is a great Connor McDavid - er, offense.

I think for the Flames to have the best blueline in the league it will boil down to hownthat new second pairing plays. Both Brodie and Hamonic are coming off poor seasons by their standards. Brodie was carrying around Wideman for 2/3 of the season, new system, and switching to the left side. He did look better after the Stone move and should look better with Hamonic. Having said that Hamonic had a bad season last year. His former coach mentioned he played part of the year at 75% and missed a ton of time with injury. His 2 year request to move west was granted this summer and it is a fresh start.
If Brodie and Hamonic bounce back then the Flames have 2 legit top pairings and likely the best D in the league.

On paper we have one of the best but I'll wait until the season starts before I make any judgements.
