Not expecting any significant moves by the Flames before the deadline, but perhaps discussions initiated now will payoff in the offseason.

Flames can't really go for another Dman unless they are trading one of their 5 must protect forwards
Currently here is my guess on the expansion list
Forwards:
1- Gaudreau
2- Monahan
3- Bennett
4- Backlund
5- Frolik
6- ? (Brouwer although incould see him being exposed)
7- ? (Ferland still has the tools to be a better player)
Defense
1- Hamilton
2- Brodie
3- Giordano
Goalie
?
Now I suppose if they traded one of Their top 5 forwards for a Dman they could go the 4-4 route. I rather they go the 7-3-1 route and try and add a forward or two before the deadline. Add a 4-6D if possible but be ready to expose them to expansion so don't overspend

I worry. GM's worried about their jobs can do extremely stupid things.

I lead the league in typing replies and then deleting them because there is no point. Think the owners will allow him to just go cowboy and start buying up useless rentals just to save his job? Jebus.
His definition of buy and the definition that produces site hits are probably very different. he is trying to build a team.

Emphasis on similar. Meaning same sort of ceiling.
A change of scenery sparker for both sides.
Then again I'm not as crazy high on Bennett's potential as others around here (aka not a #1C..just my opinion though). I do know he can and will be better than he has been.

Stajan is much more valuable to this team's success than Brouwer.

New Jersey would want to pay for half a $5mil salary for 2.5 years for him not to play with them?

Yeah both are useless overpaid 30 somethings if you ask me. The fact the Flames have 2 slots open for protection leaves me hoping they make some moves to get in the playoffs. I think both the Wild and Sharks are beatable teams.
I really hope the fact the deal is only 3 years and the history with Brouwer results in Vegas selecting him in the expansion draft. Moving that salty for nothing would be a huge get out of jail free card.
On another note it is very disappointing that neither Shinkaruk or Poirer have done anything to be considered a player that should be protected

definitely hope BT plays it cautiously...
a team in the 10-8 slot is particularly vulnerable to making rash decisions... i wouldn't want us to mortgage our future for just making it into the playoffs, just to lose (most likely) in the 1st round.
the goal is the cup, not making the first round of the playoffs.
the upcoming expansion draft throws an additional curve ball into the calculus

I have no real evidence whatsoever to support this aside from just a gut feeling and watching body language, but I imagine come July, Elliott will run as far away from Calgary as possible. I'm sure this season has been a complete nightmare for him that he can't wait to put in the rear view mirror, which changes of scenery are good for.
I actually thought he had a return to St. Louis for next year written all over him until Allen started turning it around recently

I sense Treliving would be smarter than giving up prime assets for a rental even if his job may depend on making the playoffs. I would hate to see a rental player brought in for anything other than a later round draft pick or middling prospect.

I'm racking my brain. What are our trade chips? Without selling youngsters and draft picks.

Buy young, sell old. Too bad we don't have many good old cards to play.

Wouldn't be against bringing either back, but I don't think Elliott stays. He's had an off year and probably doesn't even want to stay, but also, don't forget that if he re-signs the Flames have to give the Blues another pick. Don't see that happening for a guy that might turn it around
