They have, apparently, been trying to do that for over a year.
What contending team in their right mind would want Wideman as a rental? And if the Flames were just trying to get rid of his contract and off the team, they would have to take something equally painful back...which doesn't make sense, for if they just wait 5 months he's gone for free.

Does Wideman have any value with the perceived penalty issues from the refs? I mean I bet other teams have noticed the flames are one of the most penalized teams since the incident.

Will a new RH partner for Brodie get him to shoot the puck?

Wideman doesn't have any value without that, so no.

Hard to say. He did get married a couple years ago and lives just outside town. I can't see the Flames bringing him in though.

Wideman lack of value doesn't have much to do with the refs at all. He had no value last year after he played himself out of the NHL basically by being one of the worst, maybe the worst, defenders on a basement dweller.
Wideman hasn't had value in years and then probably only briefly.
There is a reason he went through 4 organizations in 2-3 years and was unsigned by a team that has been a perennial contender for the last decade.
Wideman is pretty much unmovable. I won't say it is impossible, but it's not like he has been a flames for the last three years because the organization values him highly.
Nothing to do at this point but wait it out.

I agree it makes more sense to wait until after expansion draft. I also would expect an LD to be easier to acquire (cheaper), so I don't know why they wouldn't find an LD to play with Brodie on the right side.

So who is calling the shots around here ? Tre had no problem with Brodie on the right side, but now pursuing a rd for him to play with. Obviously listening to gulutzans requests, shut him down.

for those suggesting Brodie is washed up wow. All our d is on the decline and there was a time not so long ago this team did horribly without TJ
I think the damage thats been done here is who he is paired with combined with the fact hes trying to do too much under GG and this new system
Put him back with GIO and put Hamilton and Engs together and or start bringing in guys from Stockton and stop trying to fill gaps with Wideman FFS.
I cant understand the philosophy of wideman and how he contributes to this team . He is either a tire fire or does nothing.
either of stocktons top 2 have to be better than Dennis the Menace

I'm pretty sure the long term plan when he got Hamilton on the right and Brodie on the left, as Gio got older. He played Brodie on the right before because he played with Gio, and because he had Wideman and Russell doing pretty well. When Gio went down, Brodie played left side with Engelland on the right.

Let's face it....the Islanders would happily trade you Halak for Wideman to shed that extra year of a contract. Or Dustin Brown, or David Clarkson... So to say there's no deal for Wideman, I don't think is accurate. I think it's more of a case that the Flames can't find a deal where they don't take back as bad or worse of a hand grenade.
I think Wideman could be moved at the deadline, but there will be a lot of conditions that would have to be considered. Not the least of which would be him being willing to waive his No Trade clause.
Flames likely need to eat as much salary as possible, or find a team who'd trade a forward with a similarly valued expiring contract back. Something like the Backstrom and Jones deal last year.
But with this being a weak draft, and Flames still somewhat alive, I think they likely end up keeping Wideman.
In terms of finding a longer term piece that might fit the bill as a decent number 4, I think too many other teams will be able to outmatch the Flames for that piece.

Is it coincidence that Brodie had solid years playing on the Right side while Gio was having Norris Caliber seasons?
And Hamilton has flourished while playing with Gio..
Also, Brodie showing his flaws while playing his natural position? Or has Brodie always had these flaws but they were covered up by Gio which allowed Brodie to play a complete rover role?
And by no means am I saying Brodie sucks and or is useless... All im saying is he is a bit overrated amongst this community.

Don't forget about Giordano going down with injury in February of 2015. Gio didn't play the rest of the year, not even the playoffs. Brodie didn't miss a beat, and most would say that he elevated his play. So, don't diminish what Brodie has done by saying he was riding on Gio's coattails. He has shown what he can do when he is the top defenseman on the team and he didn't need to rely on anybody to make him look better. He is capable of doing that all on his own.

Because GG thinks he knows best. If Brodie is forced to play LD enough, eventually GG will make an NHL-calibre left defenseman out of him, even if it takes a whole 82-game season.
I miss the days of old when Brodie-with-the-puck would make a nearly impossible skate around an incoming forechecker and still manage to pull off a tape-to-tape outlet pass. I had never noticed that level of skating-ability + puck control at the NHL level previously; and Brodie's plays made me realize he was likely among the best defensemen in the NHL.
As poorly as Wideman is for a partner, Brodie hasn't done any/many of those types of moves this season. I'm not sure you can pin the partner for Brodie losing his willingness to make that kind of play.

Hamonic would have rounded out the top 4 perfectly. Too bad he rescinded his trade request to specifically western Canada.
