As for the OP, agreed... ride the hot hand.
Im so glad Elliott is only on a one year deal. Not that I think hes garbage but it was wise to protect the organization from the possibility of suckage which has unfortunately become reality.
Johnson has had some solid outings in the last few years. Perhaps he was a hidden gem? Gotta ride em to find out.

Feeling pretty good about my one and only "bold prediction" in the thread of same name before the season started...Johnson ends season with more wins than Elliott.
I still hope they both get a bunch.

Johnson has come as advertised, while Elliott has not. As for who gets the #1 label? I'd say nobody. Like others have said, just ride whoever is hot, and that'll tell the tale by season's end.
Johnson
3-2-1
2.45 GAA
.910 SV%
Elliott
3-8-0
3.36 GAA
.882 SV%

Who knows, maybe this is the kickstart Elliott needs to get back into form. Seems like throughout his career, he plays his best when his status as the number one goalie on the team is questioned. Maybe this adversity brings out the battler in him.

Just keep playing the hot hand - competition is good. And motivating.

I would like to see a 1A &1B situation where GG plays the win streaks.

Flames may just want to look at having a shared net between the two goalies instead of having Elliott (or Johnson) as the "starter" or "number one".
Worked well for St. Louis before so perhaps we should move to that model as well and play whomever is hot.

Slightly off topic, but, if Johnson has similar or better numbers than he did last year what kind of contract could you see him signing to stay in Calgary? My guess is : 2 years 2.75 AAV or 3 years at 2.55.
Note: I think he would take a home town discount (3-3.5 AAV if he signs elsewhere IMO)

I read last night that Jake Allen is struggling in St. Louis.

St. Louis Blues
Instead, after an impressive 3-0-0 start, they've spent most of the last month on the fringe of the playoff picture. And a lot of that is due to a so-so start from Jake Allen, who was supposed to finally establish himself as a full-time starter. Instead, the Blues have been getting shelled. So far this season, they've lost 8-4 to the Blue Jackets, and 6-2 to the Stars, and 5-0 to the Rangers.
|
Maybe Elliott's good numbers in past seasons are not solely a product of the Blues' system.

Wouldn't "Has Johnson earned the starter's role?" be a more appropriate thread title? Pretty clear that his play has earned more starts in the short-term. Long-term? That's up to both goalies.

It's still early, and I think Elliott will inevitably be the #1. However, at this point, Johnson's game seems to have a WAY more calming affect on the team...we need wins, so, ride the hot 'tender.

The team really has no choice but to ride him until they lose. Then depending on his play after a loss they can look at going back to Elliott.

You may be on to something. Which is why he doesn't make for a good starter perhaps.

Elliott may be a Halak-type. Elite numbers when playing in a rotation but can't be the guy. I don't think we'll play either guy more than 55 times.
