Default Should Chad Johnson be given the starters role?

Chad Johnson is 3-2-1 on the season and looked very calm in a shutout win tonight against the Wild.

Brian Elliott is obviously struggling with a 3-8 record and a .882 save percentage.

Riding the hot hand may get us back in the playoff picture. Trying to play Brian out of his funk may have us completely out of the race before the month is out.

When do you think it's time to give Chad Johnson the majority of the starts?

He's no doubt been better. I think you have to give him a bunch more games. Play him until he's not playing well (if that happens)

Sometimes a system just works better for one goalie over the other. Maybe this is the case with Johnson

I think he deserves the next start after how well he played tonight, and if he keeps playing like that then keep starting him. Looking at his numbers from last year he's shown he can handle an extended workload and still put up good numbers.

Yes. Give him the Dak Prescott treatment, ride him until he falters.

I derided the notion of giving Chad Johnson a 2-year extension in the other thread as I don't believe he's a #1.

With that said, #31 has looked light years better than Elliott in game action. He deserves a string of 4 or 5 starts to really see if he can run with the job. Re-evaluate after that. Elliott has had no shortage of opportunities since he's been here, and he's had maybe three good games.

Lots of back to backs coming up. We'll have our clear #1 by the end of this month, for sure.

IIRC Johnson's save percentage was around .889 before the game tonight. It's not like he was playing lights out either.

The team played better, and Johnson happened to be in net. Elliott would have had the same result were he in net.

There is to much "what have you done for me lately" around here. This thread is silly.

Chad Johnson didn't go out for dinner last night. He stayed in his hotel room and ordered room service so he could mentally prepare for the game tonight.

He is a true professional.

Save percentage aside.

3-2-1 vs 3-8

That's a major difference.

Yup, and that difference was the fact the Flames didn't look like a tire fire tonight. Even when things broke down defensively, they were blocking shots all over the place. He also got lucky with several posts/crossbars. It's not like he stood on his head or anything.

If you're discounting the save percentage why mention only Elliott's in your original post?

Why not? I've liked why I've seen from him so far. Could be a nice breakout story this year.

I don't think Elliott has been terrible either, so this isn't a knock against him.

Why are people so hung up on labels? He's a 3rd liner. He's a #5 defenseman. Whatever.

Who cares about the starter label? Play the guy that's hot. Over the course of the season, their workload will define who was #1.
