I think he'll need to do some travelling to watch players the Flames are interested in.

I'm sure he'll be watching games live.

When you consider all the AHL teams in California now, he won't really have to travel far to find a game. 6 AHL teams and 4 NHL teams between Arizona and California this year, with another 2 (at least -- assuming Vegas puts their AHL team out west) being added next year.

Isn't this just a way for Treliving and the Flames to do a solid for his old boss and a respected hockey guy? Maloney gets to keep a finger in the pie so he keeps current and rubs shoulders with other hockey guys in a professional setting. Everybody wins.

Solid, respectable organizations do this. Good on the Flames.

No, that's probably very wrong.

Pretty much. Burke was a pro scout with the Ducks post Leafs, pre Flames. Maloney is going to stay in the hockey circle and bide his time to either get another GM job or move up within this or another organization.

Love the move. It's likely just until he finds another job, but still, losing Woodcroft seemed like a bit of a blow and getting a guy like this to replace him, even if it ends up being temporarily, is a great move.

Although those last 4 trades belong to the new GM.

Gotta say I like this one...

Really good hire. I would not have been surprised if he had gotten the Las Vegas job.

What a bunch of Maloney!

Sorry couldn't resist...

Good hire for sure, any time you can add some great experiences and another perspective to the mix is worth taking a chance. Even if he is only here a year or two his insight and scouting work could really enhance the organization overall. Perhaps he will help us break the Honda Center curse with his good scouting!

I think there was only ever three at one time and that only lasted less than 1.5 seasons.

It can't hurt to have an experienced person anywhere on your payroll that you can bounce ideas off with confidence. Not to mention he might have relationships with other GMs that Brad doesn't and he could get him to be involved in making connections.

So in retaliation for hiring Maloney (/greentext), the Coyotes have poached the Flames skating coach Dawn Braid.

She was working part time for the Flames and some other teams but sounds like she has a full time gig with the Coyotes.
