Has the Yotes done well at drafting? They've made easy picks like Strome, Domi, and Chychrun/Keller, but otherwise only Dvorak in the second round has panned out as a good late pick

Not really relevant since pro scouts are scouting the pros and aren't really involved in the draft (except when it comes to trade discussions).

Maloney has been given the title of pro scout. That job title traditionally would be more to advise as to which pro players the Flames should trade for and sign as free agents and prepare reports on opposing players for the coaches. He would be mostly watching the NHL, AHL, and ECHL if he stays in NA.

Drafting is traditionally left to amateur scouts.

Maloney trade history for those interested:

Although those last 4 trades belong to the new GM.

Flames hiring ex-Coyotes GM Don Maloney as a pro scout is like the Saddledome hiring Orville Redenbacher to sell popcorn at the concession.

Nice, Maloney was one of the GMs I wanted hired before Treliving was brought on.

Excellent hire. The Flames' front office looks pretty darn good right now compared to not too long ago.

Overqualified but that's a good thing as he and Treliving likely share similar philosophies and there shouldn't be much of a learning curve in getting acclimated with the team's methods. It's been a long time since the Flames have had this much talent in management.

I thought he would have been hired as special advisor or special assistant to the GM. Kinda what Conroy got when he first got his role.

Maloney on 960:

says he had other opportunities which were similar (scouting and/or consulting)
has some familiarity with the Flames (besides Treliving) Mackinnon was in Phoenix for many years and knows Pascal from Team Canada

Flames team is on the come and proud to be a part of it

plans to be based out of Arizona
be primarily responsible for scouting Western clubs (mentions California)

loves to scout - will be primarily pro side at first - could evolve to other things (hints major juniors and college)

OEL is an analytics stud so your example doesn't work. what you need is an old school GM that thinks OEL doesn't play with enough defensive grit and is unable to lead the Coyotes to wins because he doesn't hate losing enough. unfortunately, OEL's GM is not Marc Bergevin.

Adding a guy like that to the organization is nothing but a good thing

Wouldn't be surprised if he slides into management at some point

Also a common sense stud.

Where's Jim Benning when you need him?

Great move. Even if he's only here for a year or two, it's never a bad thing to have that much experience in the room.

So basically Calgary pays him to watch hockey on TV from Arizona. Seems like a pretty good gig. I like it for both sides.
