In the states I think the New Years game was initially a great marketing asset. So many people I know would watch that (at least casually maybe not the whole game or anything) that don't watch hockey in general. It was a great PR tool for going after the casual fans. Additionally, when they were scarce events, I think it allowed teams in the involved markets to go after casual fans in the hype buildup to the event.
Now, they are so overused that they lost pretty much all their meaning. I think the casual fan in the states went from 'oh cool an outside hockey game' to 'oh they're doing that again?!?!' in a few years.
Personally, I was always in favor of doing 1 game every other year. I felt like that was exclusive enough to make it cool while not being too far apart. Even yearly isn't the worst. But the moment they went to multiple games a year, the idea was done.
