That was just speculation Tweet was made an hour before the actual announcement. So far it's just the Alfie retirement, nothing else.

Alfie was a great player for them and all, but if I were a Sens fan I'd feel this whole thing was a bit tainted by the fact that he screwed them over for a meaningless season in Detroit.

Yup. That really tarnished his reputation in Ottawa in my opinion. That said, Eugene Melnyk is a complete tool of an owner, so we don't know what type of cheap contract or insult that came Alfie's way that led him to make that decision.

Agreed,
Don't get me wrong, Its good to see Alfie get his number retired. This seems a bit overkill to have a huge press conference and call it a Significant announcement just for a jersey retirement that's in December.

I think they mean that the significant hockey announcement was that Alfredsson was joining the team in an advisory capacity and his permanent move to Ottawa means he'll be around a lot.
