Interested if we ever find out he real reason behind this. I could see it being about an unwillingness to win now or trade for the home town kid. Those moves provide money to the org, rebuilding in the desert can't be very lucrative.

They had a pretty impressive record under Maloney (326-291-87) considering their budget and the chronic ownership issues. I judge managers by what they do with their budget, and coaches by what they do with their personnel. Tippet gets a lot out of the personnel he has to work with.

Cox mentioning Maloney likely leading candidate to run the Vegas expansion team.

Maloney has dealt with a truly awful situation for the past few years. How many potential owners/deals has their been? That franchise has had no stability, an arena in a location that no one wants to attend. How he ever got any player to sign into an ownership gong show like that is a miracle. What else did they expect him to do? He was essentially trying to hold a state run department together with Duct tape and Dental Floss.
I wonder how Tippett will feel about having control on personel when he finds out that he's only mandated to spend half of what he wants, and needs to find ways to bring in dead money to his payroll to make it look like they're spending more than they are. So yeah....Kyle Turris, he needs to be in the minors because we can't risk having to pay him bonuses if he does perform. I'm sure he'll enjoy that world.

Maloney is one of the most underrated GMs in the league. What are these "mistakes" that can be directly attributed to him? From here, despite heading the least stable franchise in the league (not Maloney's fault), it looks to me like he's leaving the Coyotes with one of the best prospect pools in the NHL. He's also made some great trades, such as the Vermette to Chicago for a 1st. Hiring Tippett made a lot of sense, too, as the Coyotes were a very young team and needed a structured system.

Maloney plays a long game, so yeah, I can see ownership getting antsy about Matthews and their interests not aligning.

I feel it's pretty hard to harshly judge Maloney based on the constant uncertainty of the team moving and lack of available funds to spend to the cap ceiling. He's has some pretty under the radar finds over the years scraping the bottom of the barrel for guys like Bryzgalov, Whitney, Smith, Vrbata, etc.
There are some moves I haven't liked for sure like how they let couldn't get things to work with Wheeler and Turris and some of their draft's haven't been great but for the most part they have maintained a competitive team despite everything going on against them which isn't easy as teams like the Oilers have all the money and top 5 picks you could ask for and they are never competitive.

I'm not saying you are doing this, but it seems like some fans give a GM more credit for having a good prospect pool than a good NHL roster. And in this GM's case he's been there through it all. It is his mediocrity that finally led to that team bottoming out last year. Even Tippett couldn't squeeze any more water out of a stone.
Having a good prospect pool isn't the goal. It's a head start, but that's all

I'm putting emphasis on the prospect pool because that is one of the few areas Maloney had any real leeway as a GM. When the league takes ownership of your franchise and restricts your NHL salary, you can't really take the brunt of blame for what happens next. Whichever team hires him, assuming they're not in similar turmoil, I think you'll see results under Maloney.
In other words, my evaluation of him as a GM takes into account the stark reality he faced with that franchise.

The Arizona Coyotes announced today that Don Maloney has been relieved of his duties as general manager. An interim general manager will not be named at this time and the search for a new hire - which will be led by Coyotes Majority Owner, Chairman and Governor Andrew Barroway, Alternate Governor Gary Drummond (who oversees the Coyotes hockey operations department) and President and CEO Anthony LeBlanc - will begin immediately. Coyotes Assistant General Managers John Chayka and Chris O’Hearn will manage the Coyotes hockey operations department until a new general manager is selected.

This makes no sense, the only thing I can think of is this may have to do with the way the John Scott situation was handled.

Money management.. Smith contract, and Ribeiro.
He's done some good things but it's definitely time for a change. For whatever reason he and Tip has some differences.

He seemed to be a lot more hit than miss, just his impressive haul for Yandle and Vermette last year I thought would have been enough to see him through the rebuild.

His two main mistakes (Smith contract and Riberio) I've seen Coyotes fans attribute to Tippet's growing influence in hockey ops. Now sure how true it is. A lot of them on HF and reddit seem to think the team fired the wrong guy

that would be a stretch IMO.
he doesnt even know yet WHO he would be dealing with to get Matthews, nevermind what it may take.

D'amn, if it's not the goalies, it's the coaches. Hartley fine where he is. TIppet's fine where he is in Phoenix - end of story.
