Monahan played just fine in his first year without Gaudreau on his wing and just finished being the team's best player while Gaudreau was out of the lineup. No, he's not going to beat many players one on one, but he's smart enough to know when to dump or pass it, to generate something out of nothing. He generally makes the smart play, which may not always dazzle or entertain, it does result in something positive. He's a bonafide stud top line Center. He's going to be expensive.
And yes, Hamilton is worth every penny of that contract. Hes going to be very good for a very long time. It's easy to forget he's one of the youngest players on the roster.

Let's analyse this idea that Monahan relies on Gaudreau for production shall we? I went back through Monahan's points totals for the last 2 seasons that they've played together and these are the results:
Monahan's points that had nothing to do with Gaudreau:
34 goals(+22 from rookie season)
36 assists(+12 from rookie season)
Thats 70 points(plus the 34 his rookie season) that he's put up without any contribution from Gaudreau. Ok, they might have been on the ice together and Gaudreau might have played some part, but fact is, these goals and assists came without the direct impact of Gaudreau, more or less.
Monahan's points totals that were assisted by Gaudreau:
27 goals
6 assists
Ok, fair point, of the 83 goals Monahan has scored in his career to date, 27 have come either directly from Gaudreau, or Johnny got a secondary assist. But that's a 3rd. So, 2 thirds have come away from Gaudreau. Also, of the 164 points Monahan has in his career to date, only 33 of them have come from Gaudreau.
The time's Monahan assisted Gaudreau:
27 assists
Yep, Monahan has been helped out by Gaudreau 33 times. However, he's been the one setting up Gaudreau(either primary assists or secondary assists with Gaudreau getting the primary assist) 27 times.
Conclusion is, yes Gaudreau has helped set Monahan up for 27 of his 61 goals since they started playing together. However, whilst Monahan has got 33 points from Gaudreau, he has also set up Gaudreau just as often.
So, could you make the argument that Gaudreau needs Monahan just as much as the opposite? Yes. The argument that Monahan needs Gaudreau is nonsense imo. I would say that Monahan is a 20 goal scorer without Gaudreau, but turns into a 30 goal scorer with him. Nothing wrong with that. Those 2 will play together for a long time. They understand each other very well and assist each other in equal measure. Barring injuries or other unforeseen circumstances, those 2 should hopefully give us 80/60 points seasons consistently over the next 5 years.

How is finding soft spots between the hashmarks and potting tons of goals cherry-picking?
I guess Ovechkin and Stamkos aren't good because all they do is wait around for one timers.

Or Iginla for that matter. Guess since he had the skill to find quiet ice and get shots off, he must be a floating cherry picker too.
"Monahan is a role player" is one of the silliest things I have read on this site.

TIL going to scoring areas in front of the net and scoring a ton of goals is a bad thing. Who knew?

So he's killing our powerplay by not being able to carry the puck into the zone while inflating his stats on the powerplay?

Enough.
I remember after Monahan scored 22 goals in his rookie season, most people thought he'd regress (in terms of goals). Now he's had back-to-back 60 point seasons with well over 22 goals.
I like it when him and Johnny prove people wrong.

I honestly see him scoring 600 goals and 1300 points, a future Hall of Famer in my opinion.

Monahan is cherry picker and his points are inflating his true contribution. He plays with guadreau one of the best playmakers in this league, he just stands in front of the net and waits for the pass to shoot. This is pure definition of role player and you don't pay role player top money. He is playing on powerplays and inflating his stats again while our PP unit is bottom third of the league and monahan is a big reason for that, as a center he is unable to carry the puck to the offensive zone which is the major ability top paid center should have. Each time he's approaching with the puck opposing player he avoids going 1on1 and passes the puck instead i.e. he is very easy preventable from creating offensive pressure. To me this guy is just good yet not great goal scorer if he has topend playmaker with him on the ice while unable to create any chances by himself on game to game basis and average in other skills.

Mony looked pretty good carrying the puck into the zone on that Shinkurak goal just now against LA. To be fair at one time I would have agreed with some of what you're saying but the kid has improved a lot, especially with getting more confident at carrying the puck. Kid's a stud!

Yep. 63 points up for Sean now. Unlikely that he hits 30, although we are playing the Canucks next so anything is possible.

Ooh, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the other 4. Something tells me Where Are You Chris O'Sullivan's would be in there somewhere.
