Terrible trade for the Flames. We can't be giving up a 1st for a goalie that could walk after a year

The Flames, barring a deal popping up for Hiller, go with the Hiller + Ortio tandem. If someone wants Hiller, they will probably want to send a goalie back e.g. San Jose send Stalock + pick for Hiller, or if a team has an injury and wants Hiller, you grab an AHL guy and give Ortio a shot. Unless between now and the trade deadline, the Flames go on one hell of a winning streak, the season is done as far as playoffs are concerned, which means if a guy isn't going to be here next year, and there is an offer, you clear out
Address goaltending plan beyond this season via offseason trade and/or UFA

because they are being gifted a top 5 pick for a below average starting goaltender who is going to be a UFA?

Give the guy a break. Getting injured on that play hardly indicates that he is fragile. It seems like he was a workhorse in the KHL and he had a very steady run this year. That was a bad collision. Could have happened to anyone.

Trade Hiller if possible and let Poulin and Ortio battle it out for a spot on the roster next season.

So you'd rather have a top 5 pick then potentially winning the Stanley Cup? I can't see the 4th place team in the east trading their starting goalie.

None of the playoff teams are going to trade their goalie right before the playoffs, regardless of the return and it would be stupid for the Flames to trade a top 5 pick for 1 year of a goalie.
That's a horrible trade that's lose lose for both teams.

I agree absolutely. However, saying that riding Hiller is your best bet to make the playoffs is little more than a pipe dream.

The only return we could get for Hiller is someone else's bad contract.

If Ortio falters when given his next start I would hope they throw Poulin a bone and find out if they can at least salvage one goaltender from this season. He's supposedly been very good for the Heat.

There were scouts from the Flames (and a bunch of other teams) at the St. Louis - Dallas game last night. Both of these teams are in "win-now" mode, both have 2 solid goaltenders and both might be willing to swap one of them for another pending UFA/RFA goaltender if some additional scoring/defensive help was also included.
Brian Elliott or Kari Lehtonen (the starting goaltenders last night) would be a good addition to the Flames for the remainder of this year and one or two more.

I say leave the goalie situation as is unless you can find a long term solution that makes sense or a low risk high reward situation. No stop gaps please. I'd personally like to see Ortio or Gillies getting time as well.

At this point, I'd take Billy Elliot in net over Hiller or Ortio.

I would only trade last season for a guarantee we got 1st overall otherwise I am not disappointed about it at all. Out 1st being 15th put us in a position to move the puck for Dougie which was a great trade.
This year the top 3 looks deadly and all 3 players fill big needs for the organization. Even the second tier picks 4-8 looks good.
Treliving came out today and basically said he is in a buy and sell mode. He is not trading for UFA's but if he can get a player that helps down the road he is open for business. Potential for more than just picks for our expirings.

I thnk they are giving a tryout to Kelly Hrudy. This is the reason he took extended leave.

The Flames should stick with Ortio. We know what Hiller is - a 34 year old goalie who doesn't belong in the NHL anymore. At least Ortio is a 25 year old goalie who may not belong in the NHL.
