He is a well educated man with a degree and a family that is about to double. Toiling in the minors isn't the only way he can earn a living.
He still has more than $250k guaranteed salary owed to him for the rest of the season and unlike the rest of the NHL he isn't paying 18% escrow while he is in the minors.

That is not an insignificant amount for a guy in his position.

I didn't realise his contract was that large. I thought he was making a 5 figure AHL salary.

I've always liked the all-star games in the past and i took it for what it was...a fun gimmick. I immensely enjoyed this and was rooting for Scott the whole game as much as I was for Gaudreau and Gio. Crazy! I also loved Sequin's pbp and his apology to all of Canada. Haha

While the Coyotes arguments do make logical sense, and may even be the truth, please tell me that you aren't so gullible as to think that a team would not lie through its teeth in that situation. I mean, if the conspiracy theory were true, would you actually expect them to come out and say "yeah, we included him because the NHL wanted bury him and solve this pesky All-Star Game problem."

He is on a one way contract per generalfanager. The $ figure he makes in the NHL will be the $ figure he earns in the AHL (excluding escrow payments).

I'm familiar how NHL contracts work as I've explained it several times to others in the Backburner forum. Plus, the whole CBA bedside reading thing.

I didn't know what his contract amount actually was as I never looked it up. I didn't think he would make that much.

I think it is more difficult to believe that there was a grand conspiracy. I choose to take them at face value and I'm surprised so many actually think it was anything more than a simple hockey trade.

Can't argue with his MVP. Too bad for Johnny though. He was the actual best player IMO.

From the Coyotes perspective, it might have been. But I have little doubt the NHL had to convince the Habs to do it.

For me it was the quote from Bergevin saying to the press he couldn't tell them why he made the trade, made it seem like he wasn't happy and didn't want toe the line.

Coyotes assumption that the expected a replacement vs we will have to wait for the NHL to rule made me not trust their explanation.

That said who knows it just stinks.

Perhaps your goon hate is blinding ?

Bob Mckenzie stating as much.
http://www.thehockeynews.com/blog/nh...-scott-fiasco/

Bergevins aggravated, yet cryptic & empty reasoning for it.
http://www.foxsports.com/nhl/story/n...atement-012216

Johns own mention of it in his PT article.
http://www.theplayerstribune.com/a-guy-like-me/

Hockey's leading publication suggesting exactly that.

Or the additional articles, found via the simple web search. (Aol, Yahoo, Forbes, cbs)
That said, you and Larry Brooks are aligned.

What it isn't, is absolute, which you seem to suggest.

I think some of those articles came out before Maloney commented.
I admit I had not read the Bergevin comments and they are strange.
Anywas I realize I'm in the minority on this. I'm glad it worked out but I personally didn't enjoy his participation. I don't enjoy seeing players let up. For me sports is about playing the game the right way. Scott was given treatment not disimilar to letting a toddler score a goal against his dad. Even in an ASG I thought that was silly.

But I know I'm in the minority on this one. So I'll move on and just hope this is the last of it. I'm happy people enjoyed his participation because that's what sports is about - having a fun. I didn't like it - but I know when I'm fighting a losing battle.

Glad he was voted the MVP. The league looked pretty bad when they tried to deny him going and then the trade happened. And for what it's worth, I don't buy the ''it was a whole hockey trade thing.'' Way to convenient and it got the desired result the league wanted.

Thankfully the league saved face and let him attend, and it turned out to be a great decision and was probably the most entertaining all-star game I've seen since the early 90s. The 3 on 3 worked out great. It was fast, entertaining, and even the goalies made some huge saves. Having the players mic'd up, the celebrity coaches and Nashville musical atmosphere. It was a rousing success. Toss in a feel good story like John's with his pregnant wife in attendance and his parents. You couldn't have scripted it any better.

All in all, a very entertaining and worthwhile event.

Obviously there is more to the trade than evening out the Bartley for tinordi part. It's not salary. Contract numbers? It was 2 for 2. Montreal/nhl helping Maloney remove a fire breathing Scott after the dumb daughter comments?

So much could be lost in French translation but you see what I mean I think from this....

"The timing, that was the timing to make the trade with John Scott," Bergevin told reporters. "That has nothing to do with the Montreal Canadiens with the All-Star Game. I made a trade that at the time, I had to make that trade. I have a reason that I can't really tell you why, but if I could, you would probably understand."

If this is the end of of the true enforcers, what a way to go. John Scott did the league proud this weekend , the players all seem to really like the guy. The MVP to me was just the icing on the cake, not just for him, but for the history of enforcers and what they meant to the league for so long. It's time to move past that era in hockey, but I admit that I will miss seeing the heavyweights do battle out there. To me they are/were the ultimate team players.
