Sounds like the script for some alarmist Fox special on the prophecies of Nostradamus or something.

There have been only 3 category 5 hurricanes hit the US mainland in the last 154 years. I didn't realize they were quite that rare. The storm that hit Galveston, TX early in the 1900's wasn't even a category 5. The loss of life and total destruction of that city then was unbelievable. I hope we don't see similar results with this storm. The surge and resultant floods that New Orleans is facing was also the main problem in Galveston.

River and Quarter cams are working. Bridge cam is working, but it is focused on the rain droplets found right on the lens of the camera.
Parade cam also works, but not much is going on there. That probably would be a good cam to watch, to see the floods.
I'm glued to the BeadCam but so far it has been very disappointing.

Check out ParadeCAM if you can, if you have realplayer it streams and the quality isn't half bad....It's starting to get windier, some fairly big gusts coming through.

There was a National Geographic cover story on the prospect of a hurricane hitting New Orleans. I'll try to find it online and post a link, but if i remember correctly it was in the Oct 04 issue on Lousiana Wetlands.

Edit: It was the Oct 04 edition. An excerpt can be found here

It includes this:
Quote:
But the doomsday scenario is not far-fetched. The Federal Emergency Management Agency lists a hurricane strike on New Orleans as one of the most dire threats to the nation, up there with a large earthquake in California or a terrorist attack on New York City. Even the Red Cross no longer opens hurricane shelters in the city, claiming the risk to its workers is too great.

Anytime an entire city is evacuated, you know its a BIG TIME storm. I hope everyone pulls through this one.

That's insane, New Orleans is a big place, and it's being evacuated because of a storm? You know right there this is going to be huge, more then a few people could lose more then just their homes in this one sadly.. Makes me happy I live in an area that rarely if ever gets deadly storms. (besides the odd summer tornado in country fields)

Best wishes to everyone down there, and your mom + sister, LA.

Wow, i hadn't read the Nat Geo article since i got the magazine last fall, but it's pretty scary now. Especially considering the wetlands that buffered hurricanes in the past for them have largely disapeared since the last storm they were hit by.

You should be listening to Geraldo tonight . . . . even in light of the seriousness of the situation, his over-the-top dramatizations are becoming incredibly comical. . . . . . maybe its because I'm cynical enough to detect a certain lack of sincerity somewhere in that blowhard's head.

I was in New Orleans a few years ago and the levee bustin' seemed to be an undercurrent in the back of everyone's mind. And it seems such a poor place . . . . I believe the warning that most of it will be flattened and what's left will be under tens of feet of water.

I think Bingo was just there a month or so ago.

Man, there are a lot of refineries around NO (it's the biggest oil port in the US) and i shudder to think what could happen if even a tank or two at one of them lets go. I've worked at one all summer and if the hurricane is as bad as they are saying, it could be nasty because as strong as you can possibly make the tanks, i don't think they can take 180+ MPH winds and flood

Refineries, and I believe there are some offshore rigs in the area.

That article is so creepy because it sounds like it was written as if it was in tommorows paper (except for the whole it hasn't happened yet part)

And if its as bad as they predict it will be. The beadcam will be underwater.

One of the things that I remember seeing in the Frech Quarter, where buildings with EST: 1775 or something like that posted on them. And seeing the water stains on the outside of building from past floods.

Also in elaborating on Cow's statement, in order to save New Orleans proper, they will blow the levee's (they are stacked with dynomite), and flood the surrounding parrish's (counties).

Hopefully it wont be the worst case senario, and the loss of life and buildings are a minimum.

Anyone else see the SUV drive down bourbon street?

I did see that SUV...MJK mentioned this earlier, but I still can't believe they are still driving and not away from that place....

Thanks red '00, my sister flew out to houston and my mom to dallas....very lucky in my mind. Both said that it was pretty chaotic at the airport.

I think the only vehicles on the street are emergency. There are few police cars driving around on the parade cam.
