Re: Mike
I'm not against trading him. I just think the Flames will see how their pairings work and where everyone slots in. Maybe Wideman is the #4 guy with top PP time. Could be Gio and Wideman on the first unit and Brodie/Hamilton on the 2nd. Who knows. If they get a solid offer, great, trade him. Otherwise I would keep him to start the season and see what happens.

Only trade I'd like to see is Raymond traded for a mid-round pick. Already have seen a ton of potential for guys to earn spots and are ready to make an impact... Guys like ferland and and Bennett for example. I think Treliving didn't realize how many of the young guys were ready for the NHL last year and that's why vets like Raymond/setoguchi were signed. I think treliving will go into camp knowing players in the system can step in. There's already plenty of competition for spots... Ferland, Bennett, shore, jooris, poirier, granlund, klimchuk, Arnold, agostino, etc. will all push each other for spots in the line up.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Hudler
Bennett - backlund - colborne
Ferland - Stajan - Jones
Bouma - jooris - shore
Bollig/Byron as extra forwards
Giordano - Brodie
Russell - wideman
Schlemko - Hamilton
Engelland as extra dman
Have to already look to future cap restrictions just by guessing the cost of keeping what the team already has. Gaudreau, Monahan, Bennett, gio, Russell, hudler, wideman, etc. are looking for raises within the next two years. I love the look of this team right now and would like to keep it together.

He's now been bumped further down the depth chart by Hamilton, who will eat up a bunch of both even strength and pp time.
With Giordano, Hamilton, and Brodie in the top 3, Russell's defensive game is much more valuable than Wideman's offense, so I see him getting #5 ice time, unless Hartley abandons pairs.
With #5 even strength ice time, and maybe 2nd unit powerplay time, I just don't see him being a crucial piece on the team, but could land a decent return from a team who needs that RH first pp guy.
|
I believe that Wideman will be sitting with similar PP ice time or at least share that responsibility with one of Gio/Brodie/Hamilton. Get him those "easy" assignments as a #5 to cover for defensive weakness, take advantage of PP asset and get Russell to cover for PK duties. That way you can spread those minutes and keep everybody fresh while continuing to give 120% late into the season.
Hopefully the 2nd PP group will be more of a reliable balanced threat with Hamilton or Wideman helping man the line.
Not to mention I seriously doubt Wideman being interested in being moved right now before anything has been settled. Coming off a fantastic season where you're close with your teammates and know you have the coaches trust... Not sure why you'd give up moving off a team on the rise even if it's on a perennial playoff team like Detroit.

Agreed. If anything he might push Brodie down to play with Wideman.
Gio - Hamilton
Brodie - Wideman
Russell - Engelland
LH and RH D on each pairing

Get rid of Raymond, bollig, smid, engellend. Any of those guys I'd take anything for and be happy.
If the deal is right Wideman or hudler but I'd be happy if they stay

I would like a couple of reclamation project right wingers. No term low risk. Basically setogauchi last year. If it works great if a pourier beats them out you bury them in Stockton. Adding short term right wing options gives us flexibility when Jones gets injured.
I like our D situation and wouldn't mind a 1 year Schlemko deal. Being 8-9 deep on defense is important. Smid probably clears waivers too.
Gio - Brodie
Hamilton - Russell
Wideman - Egelland
Smid - Schlemko
Wortherspoon

Assuming Emile can slot into the 2nd line LW only leaves one more need at RW long term to deal with once Hudler moves on.
Long term projection:
Gaudreau - Monahan - Mantha
Poirier- Bennett - XXXX
Fill Widemans hole though a 2-3 year deal with mid-flight FA like Odoya. Utilize him to mentor the young swedes coming up through the system.

I don't understand the fascination with Mantha. Watching him in the AHL just screams bust.

Stewart should get offers for greater than 2 years, so I wouldn't hold my breath for a 1-2 year deal with the Flames.

I thought Brodie and Engelland played amazing together in the playoffs. Couldn't imagine in a reduced role against lesser opponents.
Giordano - Hamilton
Brodie - Engelland
Russell - Wideman
Smid

I feel like there's a couple more tricks up Trelivings sleeve on UFA day. He did say he has a few things framed up in his post draft interview video on flames.com.
If he manages to reel in a solid top 6 RW somehow, I think the Flames are sitting real pretty. I can also see him bleed a couple of RFA assets along side one or two main roster assets to upgrade a position. LW isn't as locked up either.

As much as I dislike him, I think Martin St. Louis might be the perfect fit.
He's a high scoring RW that would be perfect to play on the 2nd line with Bennett and he'll only require a 1 year contract.

I think we definitely need to add a (preferably on the younger side)top-6 forward. If we can add one of those around free agency, we would be so much closer to a contending team. Just need to find a legit goalie(we might have one in Gillies or Ortio, hard to say at the moment).
Easier said than done, but hopefully Treliving can work his magic once again in the coming days.

Jooris and Ferland would require waivers.

I can't recall, are Granlund and Wotherspoon our only 2 from the end of last season that wouldn't have to clear waivers?

Sure he had a difficult time transitioning to the AHL last year but he still has top 6 potential and some qualities that you can't teach.
1) he's 6'5 and further addresses the size issue
2) he's fits in with the future age of the young core
3) he's a RW prospect
4) he can actually finish

We have a lot of depth at forward. It wouldn't surprise me if Treliving was looking at packaging a couple of young, waiver-eligible forwards with Hiller or Raymond to acquire a goalie or RW upgrade.

I want Drew Stafford. Not for piles and piles of money, but I would be pretty stoked if we got him for about what he's getting paid now for a few years.
