Default Please do absolutely nothing.

As a Flames fan, this is an absolutely stunning and unfamiliar place to be... But as we leave the draft behind and approach Free Agency I want the Flames to do...

Absolutely nothing. Get Hamilton locked up, re-up Gio, sign lost of our restricted free agents and... Stop. Resigning Ramo would be nice, but Ortio should slot in fine and needs a chance ( Id rather go with Ramo than Hillier but that doesnt seem to be happening ).

Looking at the crop of UFAs im struck by an overwhelming feeling of meh, especially now that our blueline is stacked. Really all we need now is a big right wing and we are only lacking experience at that point. I dont think you could say that about the Flames since perhaps the early 90s!

TL;DR -- Calgary management ( and Feaster ), kudos, you've done an amazing job in a very short period of time! Now don't screw it up by trading for Phil Kessel or another boneheaded move.

Anyone else feelin remarkably good about our current situation? Of course there are players id love to add, but not from the list currently available and not at the cost of our current roster.

I think we may see a depth signing on a 1 year contract.

I hope that's all we see...

I don't think they'll do anything stupid. Hamilton's contract will almost assuredly eat up quite a bit of cash, they can't afford to bring any huge contracts on board.

I think maybe a goalie and a forward and that's about it. If I was guessing I think they'll take a flyer on Stewart on a 1 or 2 year deal.

Same here not big on Free Agents, rather see our kids get a chance.
Considering how well Treliving did with Hamilton, perhaps he can do some magic and get us an age appropriate RW.

I dont think they will be signing anybody. The D is full considering Smid is probably looking at press box duties at $3+ million. Think they will just ride with Hiller and Ortio in goal.

The only way i see a new forward coming in is through trade. I'm actually quite surprised Granlund and a pick were not dealt at the draft. Maybe thats coming after all the crazy July 1st stuff settles down.

Sounds good to me. I just told the boss I would be heading home for the afternoon to put my feet up in the recliner and stare at the ceiling.

Oh, did you mean the Flames should do nothing?

I really hope poirier comes in and takes a spot. Morrison also has a decent shot at stepping in!

I'm much more excited to get news on resigning s and Hamilton contract.

If the Flames can sign a RW and maybe a 3/4 D-man that would be good, but it's not a big deal. The good thing is that with guys like Jooris, Granlund, Ferland and several others can be sent to the AHL if necessary if there are too many forwards. Crazy depth is awesome.

The only UFA that I find very interesting is Michael Frolik, and he's likely to get seriously overpaid.

Nothing personal towards Smid, but I really hope we can trade him.

How many top 3/4 d-men do you need?
By my count we have 5 of them.

well, 3 of them are more like 1/2

16 NHL forwards battling it out and a few more prospects pushing for jobs too.
7 NHL defensemen including Smid, plus Nakladal and Wotherspoon.

Really, the only thing we need is an upgrade on Hiller IMO, because I'm not really a fan, or at the very least a veteran goalie to push Ortio, be insurance against injury and also mentor Gillies in the AHL.

good thread, hope they do nothing,

July 1 is the dumbest day and hockey GMs are worst in sports.

A 3/4 defenseman in free agency will likely get the money and term a core player should get. Right now we already have those pieces on defense, so I'd leave that position alone and let competition decide the 6/7 spots.

An upgrade on Hiller or a right wing upgrade for a reasonable price are the only things I'd look at. Frolik would be nice but he's going to get big money and term.

We absolutely do need to sign a veteran goalie though. An AHL/NHL tweener that won't get scooped up on waivers.

Labarbera
Ellis
Bachman

Someone like that.

Unless of course Tree trades for someone more high profile that is.

I would have liked to see an upgrade on Hiller, but not reallly willing to give much up for it. If Ortio doesnt shine my opinion may change quickly here.

Of the UFA crowd, the only player id like, other than Frolik who will be massively over priced... Is Martin St Louis. Possible 50-60 pts, great character, possibly another Hudler type locker room influence for Bennet. Near end of career so cheapish and short term. Hes small and not truculent, so no chance its going to happen.

I think Wideman is bound to regress, and thus is at his peak value, so would like to see him moved. Particularly if he can be turned into a RW that doesn't require a UFA overpayment
