Would oilers continue to pump tires of a prospect they don't expect to sign?

@EdmontonOilers: Nicely done, @MarcoRoy11! 👌🏻 https://t.co/O6algSIvEG

I doubt that Chiarelli is running their Twitter account, so I wouldn't read anything into that.

Although, Roy is sort of a special case because he's been playing in the Memorial Cup, so they may have been waiting for his season to end before getting him signed. The Memorial Cup is later than usual this year, so it's cutting it close if they have been waiting.

Today is the last day for the Flames to sign Eric Roy.

Barring a completed deal that hasn't been announced yet, safe to say he won't be signed.

Disappointing for me. I was hoping Roy would have a future with us.

Bruce Luebke@wheatkingsvoice
According to his agent, former @bdnwheatkings Eric Roy will not sign w/@NHLFlames & will re-enter NHL Draft. http://luberslounge.blogspot.ca/ #bdnmb

-

Am I to read this as in he is refusing to sign with the Flames, or he won't sign because the Flames haven't offered him a contract?

I don't think it's much of a loss either way. He's lost in his own end of the ice.

Was a decent gamble with a 5th round pick, good luck to him in the draft.

It's almost 100% the Flames not wanting to sign him. Roy would have to be an idiot to refuse a 3 year entry level deal.

Yeah. Roy seemed like a decent pick at the time, but he disappointed every season since his draft year.

A few people were upset when the Flames decided not to sign Joey Leach too.

Just like that instance, chances are pretty good they are making the right decision here.

Should probably avoid drafting Thomas Chabot in this year's draft, too, as he has similar defensive issues as Eric Roy and less size. Jeremy Roy on the other hand...

Wouldn't be surprised to see a team take a chance on Eric Roy with a 6th/7th.

He was a low risk high reward pick since he was projected to be a 1st rounder at one point. However, we now have a log jam of defensive prospects in morrison, Hickey, Kanzig, etc

Don't agree. It's surprising that Roy couldn't get a contract even with the lack of depth at that position in the organization.

Your username seems pretty appropriate in this situation.

But yes, Roy was a good gamble by the Flames. Just didn't turn out.

You may think it is a lack of depth, but when you try to start slotting them in the NHL/AHL, you quickly run out of room. Flames are wisely being picky at the moment due to the depth they have.

I was ecstatic when we picked him. I know it's kind of a red flag when a player's stock falls that far, but I honestly thought he might be one of those diamond in the rough-type projects. Former 1st round offensive defenceman on a team looking for good D prospects. Yeah he was a 5th round pick, but I'm a little bummed he isn't going to pan out. I had high hopes for him.

Factoring in the amount of early draft choices the Flames have this year, I suppose there's a high probability that Roy would immediately be surpassed by several new prospects on the depth chart.

Good luck to him, though.

You don't give ELCs to players that you don't think will have a chance to make the NHL during the life of that ELC.

Otherwise you start flirting with the 50 contract limit quickly which may handcuff you in trades and signing free agents.

I wonder how much the Flames owning their own ECHL team will impact how they offer deals to players...

You are confusing a lack of sure-fire bets with a lack of depth.

Let's assume seven older players make the NHL squad next year:

Giordano
Brodie
Russell
Wideman
Schlemko
Smid (LTIR?)
Engelland

And let's assume the five NCAA / Europe guys stay pat:

Hickey
Gilmour
Rafikov
Billins
Ollas Maatson

Let's assume the organization likes and retains one out of three RFAs and passes them through waivers:

Cundari
Acolatse

Ramage?

And let's assume we sign an AHL Vet on an SPC

Stevenson, who was even called up as a black ace despite being ineligible to play.

Now let's look at the D we have under ELCs who will not require waivers:

Wotherspoon (Yr 3 of 3)
Sieloff (Yr 2 of 3)
Kulak (Yr 2 of 3)
Culkin (Yr 2 of 3)
Morrison (Yr 1 of 2)
Nakladal (Yr 1 of 1)
Kanzig (Yr 1 of 3)

At most, what that means is if Smid is on LTIR, one of the ELC guys is up on the NHL team.

That means the AHL team has eight spots already accounted for most likely:

Culkin-Ramage
Kulak-Stevenson
Kanzig-Nakladal
Sieloff-Morrison

You've already got to scratch one full pairing every game in this scenario. It doesn't hurt to sign a guy like Roy to an AHL contract but you can see the issues signing him to an ELC if you're not seeing NHL level play. In two years you probably want to bring in some of those NCAA / Europe guys or maybe Treliving wants to give Stevenson an ELC (Maybe even Gilmour at the end of the college season).

Can't forget our draft picks this year.

Flames say they elected not to sign Roy.

Calgary Flames @NHLFlames
The #Flames have elected not to sign defenceman Eric Roy. He will re-enter the #NHLDraft.
