To me that's part of the fun of the league though; trying to pick up players and prospects today and find that diamond in the rough where we're total amateurs and the professionals have a hard enough time!
To be fair to both of us Rinne had a long path to the NHL. I signed him as a free agent and then he went through some serious injuries. It looked like he was a long shot at best before he broke out rather out of nowhere.

Brace yourself though because now I'm really going to depress you. This was the deal you made to get rid of Rinne:

Team: Nashville Predators
- Niedermayer, Scott (D) NHL
- Rinne, Pekka (G) AHL
- Bonino, Nick (C) ECHL

Team: Edmonton Oilers
- Dumont, J.P. (RW) NHL
- Comeau, Blake (RW) AHL
- Perrin, Eric (LW) NHL
- 2009 3rd Round Draft Choice (edm)

Dear god man!

OMG. How did I not get fired for that one?!

Although Perrin did win the unsung player of the week a lot here, so maybe that makes up for it

ETA: In hindsight that is a brilliant trade for the Sharks. I didn't even remember having Rinne, so I can't say a word!

When I feel bad about trading Drouin and Faulk for Karlsson I'm just going to check back in this thread to see that Rinne deal to make me feel better.

Trading prospects is always risky, I've given away guys like Melker Karlsson, Craig Smith, Cam Atkinson and others for very little or free just to clear room or because they stalled.

It's always hard to predict exactly what will happen with guys. Maybe Gibson stalls out, maybe he becomes an allstar. Maybe Reinhart busts, maybe he becomes an all star. We won't know till 3 or 4 years from now.

I tend to agree with Caged Great. Prospects are great when they go well, but the # that do are pretty small.

Overall the returns aren't nearly as bad as most are making it out to be I don't think.

Reinhart is a 4th overall pick. Gibson is stuck behind two quality tenders. He needs a trade or retirement to get much value.

Simmonds return getting Petan and Dekeyser is more even...I think skewed in Pens favor but not overly lopsided. The only thing I was surprised about here was I was told only a centreman and so I didn't loop back. I think that is a good learning for me...never stop inquiring as a gm's asks may change.

I give credit to Drury for putting and stamp on her team. These moves aren't going to kill the franchise...it takes a lot of mistakes to turn a franchise into one like the Isles!

I like both deals and dont think any GM got the hands up...yet.
Take a look at the UFA list, there are MANY players we thought would be sure things that are playing in Russia or Euro leagues.

You've really lost it now simmer to think Bryz is still quality.

Look at Jack Campbell, Jacob Markstrom etc who were touted as top goalies and are now Floundering. Goalies are tough to gauge.

I also think Griffen Reinhart is being undervalued a bit. There is a lot of depth on the Island on D and he is seasoning in the AHL.

The second deal is not bad. Simmonds is what he is and Petan certainly has some upside. + the Cap savings are not being factored into the deal.

I just feel Gibson is totally different then Campbell and Markstrom.

He has proven he can play at a high level in the NHL. Campbell and Markstrom never had at that point.

Has he proven it?
This season he is 55th in GAA amongst goalies and 45th in SVP.
Clearly I like the player otherwise I wouldn't have traded for him - but he hasn't proven much yet.

In Markstrom's first year where he played NHL games he had a 0.923 SV % and 2.66 GAA in 7 games.

This year Gibson has played 10 games. has a 0.911 SV % and 2.74 GAA

Both Goalies have put up solid SV % and GAA in the AHL before their first chance at the NHL.

But lets just go with what you personally think about players... That always works out well for you.

He has not.
