Yah I could see that, but I have a feeling IF a center trade is in the works, Stajan is not going to be piece moved. While I agree he has some value, especially with salary retained, I also don't think we'll move forward with Backlund being our most veteran center for some reason.
I feel (just a feeling, no science or proof) that one of Backlund or Grandlund will be shipped out for a more quality return than what Stajan would provide.

exactly
I thought they'd give him some farm time, but the way Treliving was talking they watched the kid a lot, then met and built in a view of him that wouldn't change either way from 3 or 4 more games on the farm.
They liked him. They traded for him. Now they've recalled him. Can't waiver now.
Bottom line ... if he doesn't fit they deal him from the NHL roster or just lose a fourth round pick (to acquire Knight) for their efforts.
Not a big deal

They COULD just bring him up to see how he does in a Hartley practice...not likely but that could be the thought.
If he is dead after mountain climbers....back to the farm with you fatso

I remember him playing good enough to have an nhl spot (was it last year?) . He was even doing well enough that someone in my league was running him on their fantasy team for a good stretch. I've heard nothing but great things about Shore. It's exciting that we got a guy with supposed second line upside for basically peanuts.

Hopefully things work out but it appears there's going to be a constant rotation of forwards in the press box.

I think what's funny about this is Shore could have probably been centering Florida's 3rd line had they not signed Bolland to that ridiculous contract.
Thanks Dave!

Glencross - Monahan - Hudler
Gaudreau - Backlund - Jones
Granlund - Shore - Colborne
Bouma - Stajan - Byron/Bollig
If the scratch ends up being Byron - you just replaced a 5'7", 153 lbs guy with a 6'3" 205 lbs guy.
|
These are the lines I would predict as well, until Jooris gets back at least. Then I think it's something like this:
Gaudreau-Backlund-Hudler
Glencross-Monahan-Colborne
Raymond (if he gets his game figured out)-Shore-Jooris
Bouma-Stajan-Jones
Byron/Bollig-rotating in for players that are underperforming.
I don't think you see Granlund at center much the rest of the year in the NHL. He just has too much work to do on face-offs to be effective. He'll likely finish the year in the AHL and work on being a dominant player, not just a good player.

I think they wanted more size on this very important road trip through California.

I feel like this is the lineup that management wants.
With Glencross, Monahan, Colborne, Shore, Jooris, Bouma, Jones, and Bollig you no longer have a small forward group, and they would have delivered on the promise of "getting bigger".

I like that this move gives Granlund time to work on things. Shore was drafted two years before Granlund and has two more years of pro experience. Imagine where Granlund will be in two years if he continues the way he has.
Nothing but positives with this kind of center depth developing.

Looks like Granlund gets the short straw. Wearing the gren jersey at practice with Raymond.

While I agree that was Shore's spot that Bolland took, Dave Bolland has been an instrumental player (when healthy) in creating a competitive team in Florida. He's not worth the contract on the score sheet, but in terms of turning around a lame duck franchise he's priceless. Not sure Shore could have provided that. He and Mitchell were the two most important off-season signings IMO.

It's possible that Drew could play against his younger brother when we play our next game against LA.

Hopefully he's a little less Seto and a little more Conroy/Langkow (with a bit of Nicky Fotiu thrown in for good measure).

some thoughts ...
This is Treliving's first real move from his old wheelhouse of asst gm and talent searcher for the Coyotes. He would have had a good book on him from that position, and by acquiring a guy that he has to deem NHL ready to acquire its potentially his first "real" move as a GM. (clearly UFA signings are a stamp, but less of a "call" then picking up Shore.
If Shore becomes a mainstay it will look good on him for a long long time.
The prospect rankings ... love having those prospect rankings in our back pocket every season. They come in handy. The Oiler deal for Smid when we could claim we shipped out prospeccts 11 and 17 for a sturdy 5/6 dman versus the Oiler view that Calgary traded top prospects is a handy thing to have.
in this case its prospect #14 at risk for acquiring an NHL ready player, and the guy was #8 the summer before and falling.

I take this decision as a real positive.
This season is about developing players. Shore needs to be in the NHL to develop, therefore, regardless of the standings or some other fits on the team, it's best for him and for the Calgary Flames to have him seeing NHL practices and NHL games.
If that means Granlund gets sent down after playing well in his stint here, fine. If that means a veteran or roster regular needs to be moved shortly to accommodate shore being on the big club, fine.
I'm glad he's been called up, I think it really indicates the trajectory that management sees from this team. No more 'going for it'.

You may be right that some people will think he didn't earn it, but he did. He earned it by playing well enough to be called up, just for a different organization. Flames management can always cut him if it turns out that he is not ready to play. But he has earned a chance to play with with the flames. I think of this as Shore's private training camp.

Obviously the Flames know and like what they acquired, that's not an issue.
What surprises me with the timing though, is that Adirondack is short on Cs right now. They just traded Knight, Arnold is hurt, and Granlund is still with the Flames. Yes, Granlund can be sent down, but I just don't see the rush in bringing Shore up.
The obvious guess is that they wanted to add Shore's size for the west coast trip. No question that Granlund has been struggling in the face-off circle, and is outmatched physically against the Kings, Sharks and Ducks, so replacing him with Shore from that perspective makes sense.
As for waivers, it isn't an issue until they actually paly him, but hard to imagine that they bring him up and don't play him. Especially on a 4 game road trip.
So, welcome to the Flames.
