I never heard anybody call Tavares that or even a future franchise player for that matter.

I seem to remember reading a couple articles about him back when he was still 15 or 16 and some people were of that opinion. Unfortunately I can't remember where I read it. I always think it's hilarious some of the comparisons that are made when a guy is still in high school. Remember, Mark Jankowski is the next Joe Nieuwendyk

Not sure why anyone would use Gretzky as a comparison to Tavares though, he has always been a great goal scorer and an average to slightly above average passer. He also doesn't have that magical vision on the ice that Gretzky had. Now Johnny....

Though if we do draft McDavid, the Flames will be in the same boat as the Oilers, with a bunch of highly-talented forwards and bare cupboards on the back end. Remember how we used to mock them for that? The Flames would have to seriously consider moving a top young forward for a top young d-man.
|
We mocked Oiler fans for building through the wing, which is never a recipe for success, ever. Building through strength down the middle is a solid game plan.

I would say their piss poor defense and goal is a bigger problem then their centers. but I do agree, their best player is a LW but I would rather Seguin.

Treliving more or less answered this question at the STH event. Where he stated that their goal was to draft and acquire the best player available and then trade to acquire the missing pieces.
He also was very keen on having the players develop over time before making the step up to the NHL level. Burke also re-enforced this.

I remember jumping for joy when they took Hall over Seguin. Always build around a centre. The Flames came about as close as you can come in 2004 by building around a winger, but that was really once in a million and all they ever got. Never won another playoff series after that.
I want to see us follow the Blackhawks model, as much as I hate that team.

if trading him to get a package of players that sets up the team to be a contender like Colorado then why not. It would have to be a hell of a package, but I would consider it.
the flames traded Brett Hull for a package of players that helped them win the cup. I would still do that because of the outcome.

He broke Gretzky's CHL record for goals by a 16 year old.
Not saying they were saying he's the next Gretzky, but that's probably when you heard their names in the same sentence.

Tavares' injury has people not realizing how good he has gotten. He was 4th in PPG last year behind Crosby/Malkin and Getzlaf.
Wouldn't be surprised if he ends this year 2nd in scoring behind Crosby assuming both stay healthy.

90 is respectable. Crosby has a averaged 114 so far.

Benefit of hindsight is 20/20. Look at the package Sutter got for Phaneuf.

They did build around Iggy, solid D and Kipper. But having centers like Conroy, Nilson on that Niemenen- Nilson- Donovan line, and Yelle (probably one of the best shutdown guys ever) was a benefit, and Yelle's contribution can't be understated. ( with the full benefit of hindsight, as that is not terribly sexy on paper - but having guys that suit the job is better than square pegs in round holes, when everyone accepts the job)

that was a garbage package from the start. All I am saying is if a Lindros type package game on to the table I would look at it.

So we get a goalie second overall?

Draft McDavid/Eichel. Don't over think it and trade down from Crosby to draft Jack Johnson or Malkin for Cam Barker (for argument sake).

Even if McDavid is the next Crosby, is the upgrade over a Monahan or a Bennett going to worth going that route?

Yes it is.
Don't over think it and certainly don't try to be too clever. Grab BPA.

Came here to say this...
Tavares is obviously not the next Gretzky, but he's pretty damn good. His only decent linemate is Okposo as well, who though decent is a lot like Kunitz in that his stats are massively inflated from Tavares.
