Draft McDavid and move another centre to the wing.

Though if we do draft McDavid, the Flames will be in the same boat as the Oilers, with a bunch of highly-talented forwards and bare cupboards on the back end. Remember how we used to mock them for that? The Flames would have to seriously consider moving a top young forward for a top young d-man.

Just for some devils advocacy, what if you were offered a package of, say:

- Ekblad
- Barkov
- Florida's 1st round pick in 2014 (let's say 7th overall, just for fun)

Does that (admittedly silly but I suppose not altogether impossible) proposal tempt anyone?

A generational talent is great for marketing and everything else, but would anyone argue that the team that got Lindros won that trade?

People are forgetting about a big right winger who just may oust McDavid for the #1 spot by the time june comes around.

Connor McDavid will certainly be a good one but mark my words... Jack Eichel will be an absolute beast.

You don't pass on generational talent.

1. you don't get many chances to actually acquire it
2. you will look like a fool when that talent outperforms whatever you get back

arguably only because of concussion issues

and its not like Quebec passed on him... and I doubt in this day and age you get the same package they got

When you look at what Colorado turned that total package into there's not much of an argument:

So looking down the line, Quebec received Forsberg, Roy, Tanguay, Blake and other key players for Lindros

This "generational talent" gets thrown around a lot and IMO too much. McDavid to me will be a #1 center in the NHL but not likely a generational player. The last one is Crosby and McDavid is no Crosby

I disagree, I think both Eichel and McDavid will be 90+ point centres at minimum in their prime.

No worries. Flames won't either. 10-12% if were unlucky in 1 goal games again.

Call me insanely crazy but I actually think Johnny Gaudreau will be a "generational talent"
I have never seen a 21 year old that reads the game that well...ever.

Entirely disagree on the Lindros deal. Even though Quebec didn't want to do it, it has set their franchise up ever since. And in hindsight I would trade Lindros for Forsberg straight up, even without their respective injury issues.

I think you listen to offers when you've got the #1 pick. I don't think you do a deal because we're already deep enough at centre but if someone overpays enough, it could set up the franchise better than having McDavid.

Previous post was confusing. I was responding to Sureloss and was saying I would take Forsberg for Lindros straight-up, not vice-versa.

Well only because Lindros got obliterated by concussions. Forsberg for a healthy Lindros straight up? Not in a million, Lindros was an unstoppable machine before his head went to mush.

90 isn't "generational" to me unless the + is well over a 100. Crosby is generational, his 1.4 PPG in the NHL is something McDavid is unlikey to even get close too.

Ok, fair enough. I still think Gaudreau will be better than either one though.

3 inches and 30lbs, the whole hockey world would be all over him.

Soon they will see the light!

The thing is that both of them played a style that caused them to have frequent injuries. Great to speculate on what each could have done if they weren't injured but a big part of what made both of them great was that they played recklessly which ultimately ended both their careers.

Still, I don't see how you can say that Philly got the best of that deal.

Wasn't Tavares gonna be the next Gretzky? You just never know. Having said that, I think you just take the best player available, forget about specific positions. You can always acquire what you need later through trade. Better to be dealing from a position of strength
