Could see Bennett get his 9 games because of this. Granlund could also really push for a spot te same with Reinhart/Knight. There is also a chance if Johnny/Sven force their way on the team that Colborne stays at C for a while

What about if we replaced him with this guy?

I think Bennett/Johnny decisions will be made independent of this injury. My guess is Granlund.

That quote does not correspond with the thread title or with most of these posts

He's day to day

Hartley said “I don’t have any news to tell you, but I’m worried, I’m always worried."

He was probably asked if he's worried.

Some of you make it sound like he won't be back on the ice until Christmas.

Worst case scenario, Backlund misses all of the preseason action. It's only an abdominal strain, not tear.

Absolutely not made of glass, but he definitely always seems to be on the wrong end of lady luck.

I wonder if he pushes himself too hard. They always seem to coincide with him turning the corner; I wonder if he feels it too and goes beast mode.

Was Backlund golfing at the Flames Golf Tournament?

So he's absolutely not injury prone, but he's absolutely for sure always unlucky? I'll admit it could be either at this point, but what is likely true right now is the biggest thing holding Backlund and his development back is his inability to stay healthy.

4 full NHL seasons to date and in 2 (half of them) he hasn't mangled to even play half the games, and I can't remember if in either of hi almost full seasons was he at all hampered by injury.

At what point do the Flames honestly need to start looking at this kids inability to stay healthy as a major factor in how he fits into their future plans?

Bolded for fully agree, great point

I don't think we're there quite yet.

The best comparison I can think of (a terrible example right now as he finished this season injured) to highlight what I think is the issue, is Brett Lawrie. He's WAY more jacked up than Backlund, but comparable in what needs to be worked on. He took a ball off the finger this year, but he looked great since he toned it down a bit and laid off the Red Bull.

I can only come to this conclusion from the coincidence that it's JUST as he looks like he's turning the corner.

At first I was disappointed in sureloss for the first time ever pretty much. The quote and thread title is off base. On second thought, yes twitter has a limitation on characters but she added the notion that it was worse than expected. Hartley never said that. Bad reporting

Wasn't his shoulder injury from a semi cheapshot from Malkin when they collided or is my memory off. I swear I remember him and Malkin being involved in an awkward collision that looked painful.

I hope they keep Colborne on the wing. Once he was put there permanently, he really started to excel playing with Monahan. Plus, if he's on the wing, this leaves another spot open for Bennett/Reinhart/Granlund/Knight.

This is the advantage of having a guy like Stajan, who can be effective on any line. He's no superstar but he can be serviceable where you need him.

Unless Bennett is terrible through the rest of the preseason you have to think he'll get his 9 games if Backlund is out for any significant amount of time. Although that'll be a heated battle between him and the rest of our young C's for ice time. Question: if Bennett is a healthy scratch, does that still count towards his 9 games?

I would expect in the next CBA that the NHL clubs will push for team mandated camps or fitness camps over the summer.

A player coming into camp with an abdominal strain or tear that is a possible long term injury is a problem.

The will call this "the Phil Kessel clause".

Healthy scratch doesn't count toward 9games.

Hopefully he gets healthy. Nobody has pointed out how this may expedite his KHL prospects...

Not to worried. It just means it may open a door for Granlund to start with the club. Bennet and Gudreau most likely wont be making the squad.

I got an abdominal strain a year ago and it was much more annoying than I anticipated this injury would be as you don't realize how much you use those muscles until you injure them. Like others I have higher expectations of Backlund this year but the guy is going to have to show he can stay healthy as he's starting to have an injury rap sheet comparable to guys like Gaborik and Havlat.
