I would expect in the next CBA that the NHL clubs will push for team mandated camps or fitness camps over the summer.

A player coming into camp with an abdominal strain or tear that is a possible long term injury is a problem.

Is/are there a lot of injuried players showing up to camp?

Hopefully one of Reinhart/Granlund take advantage of this.

Malkin/Crosby/Giroux/Doughty, etc. Don't think any of them are serious though.

I hope this doesn't look harsh, but I'm not too fussed. Means we get to see a better look at Granlund or Reinhart. Lets just hope that Sean can step up, because he'll need to cope with the pressure of being 1st line centre. Space now for Granlund or Reinhart to force their way onto the opening day roster.

Feel bad for the guy, I was expecting a big year from him. Don't think 50 points would have been out of reach for him if he stayed healthy.

Hopefully Granlund takes advantage of this though. He could definitely earn a spot now.

Bad news for him since he was trending towards a nice contract if his play kept improving like last season. Hopefully he's not out too long and can salvage most of the season. If he can't start the season I'm hoping Granlund gets his spot.

Doubt sean will step in as the first line centre my guess is stajan will fill that role

Hartley was just quoted as responding to the question of Monahan playing 1st line C as: "It's not about age, it's about performance" or something like that.

Of course we could all be jumping the gun. This is all coming from Hartley saying "I'm worried". No official word from the Flames that his injury is longer term. He could be back in early October.

I like Backlund as much as the next guy, but I'm starting to get some serious David Moss flashbacks with Backlund these days. The guy is starting to get a reputation for being made out of glass.

Hopefully this isn't too serious and he starts the season on the roster. Unfortunately, we've all seen how difficult it can be to get a good start to the season after missing training camp.

I just read that grade 1 abdominal tear takes up to a month grade 2 tears 6 weeks and complete tear which requires surgery up to 3 months.

Did they say it's a tear? Thought it was a strain.

I don't know, he seems to get random injuries though. Like a broken finger, an abdominal tear and whatever. Nothing really connected that implies he's made of glass. Just bad luck with freak injuries.

As for the rumor, any coach would be worried if their best center who happens to be a young player who is shaping up to be a key member of the teams core is injured without a full diagnosis.

Didn't Monahan have a few games there last season over Stajan? Obviously it will all come down the form of both players, but when it comes to candidates to that vacant 1st line spot, for me Monahan is ahead of Stajan.

i assume a lot of players use the offseason to gain back strength and size that is lost over the course of the season. I would assume this means an offseason that has a heavy dose of the weightroom and perhaps some endurance stuff, but everything off ice.

Is the occurrence of these hip/goin/abdominal issues due to the fact that they simply haven't skated in a while which is causing some muscles that haven't been stressed in sometime be hit with a surge of heavy skating?? Hard to imagine folks hurting these areas while doing your usual power lifting exercises (squats, deadlifts, etc).

It's not a tear, it's a strain:

http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=731342

Quote:
The news wasn’t all good for the Flames, though. Mikael Backlund, listed as day-to-day with an abdominal strain, didn’t skate at all Monday.
In fact, Backlund hasn’t taken a regular shift in camp yet.
“I don’t have any news to tell you, but I’m worried,” Hartley said.
“I’m always worried.
“He’s still not on the ice. I’d like to see him on the ice. That’s for sure.”
