New head coach of the Oilers?
That would pretty much complete the circle in Edmonton. Just think how much knowledge of winning they'd have in the front office then! Another one of the good 'ole boys back together again.

Word today that Nonis knew this could happen when he signed his extension.. so I'd assume he'll stay on. Which of course leads the question as to what this guy would actually do if he can't change the GM.

You think being a pro hockey player who then spends 5 years in the NHL head office is comparable to a McDonald worker?
I am sure some of the CEOs of McDonalds type companies are guys who worked for their companies prior to being CEO.

Damien Cox says Shanahan will join the Leafs
http://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey...leafs_cox.html
Quote:
The intriguing concept of Brendan Shanahan joining the Maple Leafs has been rattling around the restless mind of Tim Leiweke for months.
But after an explosion of speculation from a variety of media outlets in the past 48 hours forced the idea to be fast-tracked, that concept is about to turn into reality.
Shanahan, according to multiple sources, will resign his position as the NHL’s director of player safety as early as Friday and immediately join the Leafs this weekend as the team closes out a disappointing season.

DGB is the best:
Down Goes Brown@DownGoesBrown15 secs
From now on, Brendan Shanahan won't have to suspend anything besides his sense of hope.

Leafs can have Shanahan. I dont see what amazing value he adds to that team. Unless he's lacing them up that team is still hot garbage.

Note the it is not President of Hockey Operations, but rather President.
Like what Ken King does here (Without the CEO part)

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Sounds like official announcement of Brendan Shanahan as new president of Toronto Maple Leafs will be made tomorrow in a news release.

What a ridiculous hire. Serves no purpose. Funny how owners are so willing to back up the brinks truck to these glorified figureheads.

Well we know that either his family didn't want to move west or he didn't like the Flames situation because a year later he's accepted the same job he turned down with the Flames. Honestly I'm glad things turned out the way they did. Not saying that he would have done a bad job with the Flames but during a rebuild it's crucial that you are making the right decisions and a guy learning on the job may have not been the perfect match for a team that's in a position where learning on the job could be costly.

Actually with the Flames he was being offered President of Hockey Ops. Like btimbit pointed out he is essentially getting Ken King's job with the Leafs.
edit: McKenzie agrees
http://www.tsn.ca/VideoHub/?collection=72&show=323539
says Shanahan would not leave for just Hockey Ops position, wanted control of both Hockey and business side

That last part is a joke - I have no doubt that Shanahan has great knowledge on the hockey side of the fence, but managing the business affairs of a place like the Leafs? Not even close. Contract negotiations with vendors, building operations - nothing he's ever dealt with.
My guess is that MLSE has the world's best Chief Operating Officer lined up who'll do the real work and let Shanahan play Pretend Boss with respect to the business side of the deal. From that respect - MLSE is always going to be in the driver's seat.

I'm not a fan of this move. What has Shanahan done to deserve this?
At least he'll stop suspending Leaf players. He gave them more suspensions than any team.

I think the only positive out of this is that Will Arnett is about to get alot of good material.

The NHL front office stuff is decent experience and I give credit to him for that. Excluding that... yes I do think playing in the NHL gives you as much as insight into running the entire organization as working in a McDonalds gives you to run the corporation.
Why do only good players get these jobs with no experience? Why does Trevor Linden have the ability to jump right into this job (I will give Shanahan a pass due to his front office experience although I'd rather have a guy who worked in a team's front office) while guys like Scott Walker have to start out in juniors. These hirings are purely PR moves.

That pr aspect is why I look at this hiring a bit different since the leafs are going to sell tickets regardless.
