There has never been any hint that Nonis undermined or got Burke fired in either Vancouver or Toronto.

Kevin Lowe's been using that excuse for years now as well. Any of these guys need business acumen. Shanahan's been working for the league as a disciplinarian. Let's not exaggerate his credentials. Where's the negotiation and business side of things that I'm missing?

This Lieweke guy allegedly has a good rep and he's done a good job with Toronto FC (at least it appears so) and the Raptors (with the new GM)... but giving a guy a 5 year extension and then getting rid of him (has the extension even started?) is ridiculous.

EDIT: it has started... his old deal was replaced by this one so this is year 1 of 5.

Ex players don't usually go from no experience directly into a position that oversees all hockey decisions.

Colorado's success this year (which if you go by advanced stat is very luck driven) is going to lead to a bunch of teams regretting making moves like this.

Hiring a guy to lead a hockey organization because he was a good hockey player is ridiculous.

That said... Shanahan has at least spent some time working in the NHL offices so its not like yanking a guy off the street. There has got to be some annoyed NHL front office people though... having a sweet hockeydb page is more important than having a solid front office resume it appears.

Depends on what his role would be.

Working for a large sports organization would give him plenty of experience in how to run a large organization including how it manage people, tine, delegate responsibilities, find the top talent, put people into placed that best utilize their abilities.

He is doing more than making videos everytime someone F's up.

His time playing hockey at an elite level gives him hockey knowledge that he could transfer to recognizing smart hockey minds and evaluate past decisions.

Spending time in Detroit could have given him a sense of what they did as an organization to be successful.

He could have learned a lot from guys like Bowman to see what made him a good coach.

He has been actively involved in professional for 25-30 years in different roles that seems to be a pretty decent background to take this type of job on.
