Yes it is - cap is calculated daily.

If you have been under, you accrue space and can be over until you use up the space.

That is why Calgary can pick up $53m at the deadline

Sure it is. If you have $2M in cap space at the start of the season, you can add a $2M contract. If you have $2M in cap space with 25% of the season left, you can add an $8M contract. That's how the Flames were able to add Jokinen at the deadline in 2009.

Try the trade machine for yourself: http://capgeek.com/trade-machine/

Make the trade with "Today" as the date, and it's over the cap. Make it with "Deadline" as the date, and it's compliant.

They could hold on to Gagner for now and hope he goes on a crazy hot streak for a few days like he did last year and then ship him out. Otherwise, getting a decent bottom 6 winger like Clifford isn't all that terrible.
In reality Sam Gagner is a patently mediocre player. That 8 point night in 2012 was needed to get over the 40 point hump and last year he was putting up points in a contract year. After he signed the contract it was right back to being mediocre.

Either that or he's taken a page from Eklund's book of workless anticipation.

The Oil are going hot and heavy for Reinhardt. Eff the defense! We want all the centers!

Really? Associating Mackenzie with Eklund?

Also, as lowly as I think of Gagner, them trading him one for one for Kyle Clifford and I assume a middle pick and retaining salary would be pretty damn funny. Considering Greaser expectations for his return value.

@TheFourthPeriod: EDM asked about Muzzin from LA but were told no last I heard. Martinez could be in mix w/ Clifford, but LA also wants to bolster D elsewhere

People have been saying how bad Gagner has looked and that he isn't a 2nd line center. He certainly wouldn't be 2nd line center in LA, but he certainly is in Edmonton. That said, consider the team he plays for. I bet Gagner could easly re-develop into a bonafide 2nd line center on almost any other team.

I am surprised nobody has come to his defense by mentioning his 8 point game from a couple of years ago.

Gagner is having as good a season as Baertschi was when he got sent down to the Heat.

Horak would be an adequate replacement for his 6 goals and 23 pts in 45 games... playing 18 minutes a game -20!!!

Ganer is a 6 year NHL pro.... He is supposed to be a leader..... look how well he is leading the oilers.

I would be shocked if LA takes him off Edmonton's hands.

5 M / year for the next 2 years??? well for basically Stempniak.

Stempniak has more trade value than Gagner.

I would take Clifford for Stempniak.

what would you give for Gagner? Stajan? Colbourne? Bouma? a 4th round pick?

I wouldn't trade Stempniak for Gagner as at least Stempniak is gone next year.

IMO, the Kings will land Andrew MacDonald from the Isles.

good bet. Actually he'd be perfect for them, only makes 550k this season and will be a solid 2nd pairing guy.

Don't really like what the oilers are doing, they seem to just be swapping things around hoping something clicks... I feel they won't be able to challenge until they drop one of their big guys for some serious D help, til then... I guess we just sit back and watch.
