First wave of young guns all gone - Cogliano, Gagner, Paajarvi. Not long before the second wave are gone too.

Oilers need a guy like Clifford but from a value point of view it is a terrible deal.
Neat.

In what universe is Gagner a 'very good second line center"?

I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up as Clifford + 3rd or something like that, but it isn't a bad trade for the Oilers.
Gagner has been awful for them because he doesn't fit their lineup (I agree that he'll be a better player elsewhere).
The Oilers need more Clifford and less Gagner.

wasn't that the 2nd wave already? Thought the first wave was Schremp, Nilsson, O'Marra, Brodziak and Pouliot.
Oh, and Gagner is NOT a very good 2nd line center.

It looks like MacT is filling out the bottom half of the roster, basically, two small, speedy scoring lines and then two lines with grit. Not sure how that's going to work against teams in the Pacific division. I am looking forward to seeing Gagner blossoming in LA and Oiler fans wondering what went wrong (see Cogliano)

Only if they make the trade at the deadline. If they made it today, LA would be over by $1.5M. To make the trade today, the Oilers would have to retain 32% for the Kings to be compliant (according to the CapGeek Trade Machine).

Geez Gagner is probably at home praying this goes down. From the Gulag to Hollywood on a playoff team?

Am I the only one that'd rather have Kyle Clifford on my team than Sam Gagner???

I think Clifford plays his role better than Gagner.
This would actually make the Oilers a better team.

I don't believe the cap works like that. If you trade two players it either works or it doesn't, it's not dependant on the time of year.

So does shipping off Gagner open the door to them taking a center over Ekblad? That would be neat as well.

Gagner's value isn't very high right now because he has looked like garbage this year. If you're not lighting it up offensively and you're lost in your own zone you won't get much in return. Clifford at this point seems about fair, actually might be a solid deal for the Oilers.
They could hold on to Gagner for now and hope he goes on a crazy hot streak for a few days like he did last year and then ship him out. Otherwise, getting a decent bottom 6 winger like Clifford isn't all that terrible.

this seems like a good move for the oilers....but who plays centre for their 2nd line now?
and I don't think it will be straight across especially since the oilers will have to eat some salary for it to work. Clifford plus a prospect or 2nd rounder.

Kings ruined Clifford by bringing him into the NHL as an underager. He had potential to be a reasonable power forward guy (not top tier but a Ryan Clowe type)... he was up as a 19 year old and got beat up by older bigger guys in fights and now he's Tim Jackman.
EDIT: on the bright side for the Oilers he's probably a guy that Kassian would fight so they could finally get their revenge.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie 5m Interesting tweets from @AJonSports regarding possible deal between LA and EDM involving Gagner and Clifford. Also hearing this possible.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie 3m
It's complicated because of LA's cap issues -- EDM would have to retain salary? -- and LA may have to give up another piece. Stay tuned.

Darryl knows what can happen when you run with zero cap space. Wonder how he would feel about this.
