I wonder what kind of return Smid could bring in at the deadline.
Doug Murray and Robin Regehr were both traded for two 2nds last year. Would Smid be in that ballpark?
That would really irk Oilers fans considering that the Flames got Smid for two C level prospects.

I would think cammalleri should bring back a 1st round pick and B level prospect. Hopefully he is traded to an eastern team since that would likely result in a better pick from how bad all of the eastern teams have been. I could see teams like New York, Phoenix, and Nashville going after him... The kind of teams that usually need to gain more scoring late in the season/playoffs and needs help in their powerplay.

While Galiardi looked pretty good for maybe the 1st 3 or 4 games, he's been pretty awful since then in terms of doing anything half-good for the most part, despite his good possession rate numbers.

Prior to his injury he led the league drawing the most penalties. Now imagine if our PP was better and the value in having someone like Galiardi who draws penalties due to his hustle. Sure he is in a slump but there is more to the picture than G and A. We all looked at Monohans high shooting % and knew it couldnt last. Galiardi has a extremely low shooting % and just as Monohans went down, odds are Galiardis will go up.
I also believe he was 1st or 2nd in flames fwds for blocked shots.
way way way too soon to write him off especially considering what his salary is.
Some of CP seems to think that a rebuild means trading every single guy over 26. Trade Smid? back to my point of "good luck signing free agents as you become known for acquiring players only to ship them out right away". Smid could be a valuable part of this rebuild. He is young enough and brings a element that only SOB has on the back end only Smid is a much better player.
Why in the world would we trade Russell? He has been outstanding compared to what was expected of him and is another valuable piece to our rebuild.
Next year,
Free agent signing of a top 4 D man and run with
Gio, Brodie, Wideman, Russell + 1 minor league guy who has earned a spot (not named Breen unless he drastically improves)
Butler and SOB can hit waivers

I appreciate the thoughts on who goes where but feel that there are going to be few higher end picks one for one with trades.
The players are one asset to trade the other two huge things going for the flames are cap space and buy outs. By freeing up cap space and taking on some bad contracts for short term or for buy out will make the trades much sweeter than player A for this round pick.
I look forward to trading cammy for a slug who is overpaid and watching the melt down about how the flames got beaten so badly in the trade and feaster needs to go. Then in the summer a much higher draft pick is picked and a player is gone or kept to hit the floor
the sooner the trades happen the better use of cap space and buy outs. But then we can hear how the trade would have been so much better at the deadline when more teams are bidding but the capspace is less valuable.
Should make for some fun trolling

I just hope that the Flames can avoid all of the drama that comes along with NTC/NMC when it comes to Cammalleri.
Maybe Burke should just ask him right now if there is a particular spot that he would like to go to and just try to work out a trade with that team.

well if its a dream? Trade everyone but Monahan for a 1st rounder and go into next year holding 22 1st rounders? Is that too much?

1) Cammalleri for a 1st, plus prospect if possible.
2) Flip Russel for whatever we can get (we bought low, now it's time to sell high)
3) Keep one of either Stajan or Stempniak, and trade the other (and replace him via UFA)
4) Put Shane O'Brien on a rocket, and fire him into the sun

Cammalleri to Vancouver for Gaunce and conditional pick (1st if make playoffs, 2nd if miss)
Backlund to Carolina for Ruutu and Rask
Stempniak and Butler to Boston for Khokhlachev and conditional pick (2nd if final four, or else 3rd round)
Stajan to Detroit for 2nd round pick

Cammalleri is someone I am so divided over, one part of me wants him to stay and re-sign because I think he is a good piece to have going forward, and he seems to like Calgary. The other part wants that 1st round pick, which is so coveted these days.
That's really the only piece that I could conceive that nets us anything of value. Though Stajan for a 2nd would be pretty awesome, I don't see it happening though.
Maybe we can pick up another teams salary at the trade deadline, some team looking to stock up but doesn't have the cap space, we could be a third player to take on some salary and also a prospect or a pick while we're at it.

Phew, thank goodness you're around to catch people who use resign when they should use re-sign. Because hockey players resign all the time and it's so confusing, and I have no idea what anybody is talking about at any time.

Out with the old, in with the new!
Cammy for a first + either a prospect or another pick
Stempniak for a second and a prospect
Backlund + a defenseman for a first and a prospect
SOB for a firm handshake and an autographed picture of the GM who traded for him
Smid for a second
Russell would be good if we could re-sign him for under 2 mill or trade him for a first or second
Galiardi for a second or third or a prospect of that level
Butler for a late pick
Smith for a late pick
Demote Joey MacDonald to bantam hockey so he can make some kids feel good for scoring on him
All of thse guys can be replaced in the off season and none of them are part of our new "core". Journeymen and vets with leadership can be had in the off season for nothing, it's time for the Flames to cash in at the deadline and move forward.

Mike Cammalleri (50% retained salary) to Toronto for Gardener and Liles.
Backlund, Nemisz, and Butler to Florida for Kulikov
Stajan to whomever for a 2nd
Re-sign Stempniak
Wideman for a 1st.
Re-sign Russell is a must, we will seriously regret it if we let this guy go.

I want more draft picks than the Buffalo Sabres. That would be my ideal scenario.
They currently have:
1st round: BUFF + NYI
2nd: BUFF + LAK + WILD
3rd: BUFF
4th: BUFF + WILD
5th: BUFF
And they have LAK and WILD 2nds in 2015.

What baffles me about this is how many people want to trade Russell. He is our leading defenceman in points and is one of the only players who is a plus on the team! I know he hasn't been playing the toughest minutes but the guy has been rock solid and could really be a player in the future. I don't think that we can expect anything we get in return for Russell to be better than what he currently is and may provide for us in the future.

Pretty sure his NTC only includes 7 teams. The Flames have over 2/3 of the league as potential options

Because they're focusing less on his performance as a player and more on what we gave up for him, hence the whole "buy low sell high" deal. Flip him while he's worth something. There's merit in both ideas but I'd rather stick with re-signing him if it's a $2 mill hit or under.

Depends on how much money he wants/term. We traded a 5th for him.
If he wants too much money, id trade him for whoever offers the most.

He's worth more than $2M/year easily.
