Of all of our assets to trade, Cammi is worth a 1st. Stajan and Stempniak are more likely to get 2nds.
I agree that Cammi likely wants to go chasing a cup contender to play for but it is possible that he is motivated by other things. Perhaps he would rather sign a big contract and stay here. Maybe he prefers the money, maybe he likes the city for raising a family.
Whatever Cammalleri's mindset may be, the Flames should be ready with a contract offer to hand him on the off chance that he decides that he wants to stay a Flame.

Meh. Given the current state of the Flames, there are no other real viable options, but when you look at many other captains around the league, I don't put Gio into that category. Not an elite player, or the kind of guy who puts a team on his back.
Not saying he's a bad player, just mostly average. Nothing about him really stands out for me.

Oh, I certainly agree with all of yur points ... It's simply my preference these guys get moved for more Poiriers and Klimchuks.

Because even hockey players might want a work/life balance. These are guys that still have families and things going on outside of hockey. Maybe he and his wife really like the city and team management, and they value that more than trying to chase a cup 1/30 teams win.

I doubt Stempniak or Stajan could garner a 2nd round pick in return. I do think Cammi get a 1st and the flames need an extra 1st.
I think Cammi's re-sign comments was more "lip" service than anything, so he would not to rock the boat. When the Flames are out of it by December, i have a hard time believing that he will want to stay and go through that for another year or 2.
The only thing surprising about Gio being named Captain, was that they did not make him wear the new 3rd uniform when accepting the honour.

“Mark represents all the qualities that we set as a coaching staff and an organization,” said head coach Bob Hartley. “He is a quality man who is proud to represent the Calgary Flames both on and off the ice. We are very happy with these three men leading and setting the example for our team, and especially our young players, as we move through this crucial yet exciting period in the history of the Flames franchise.”

I don't think using the Leafs as an example to be followed is helping your argument.

IIRC didn't Cam just get married in the off-season?
Either way none of us really know where the mindset of any NHL Player is. Maybe Cam wants to stay put for a few more years and start a young family and maybe he wants to be the go to guy/mentor for a rebuilding team. It's hard to tell, but as long as he works hard, produces and acts as a solid influence on the team I would like to see him stay on as a strong veteran presence.

I prefer to take public comments at face value until new information surfaces or actions indicate a change in stance, as opposed to reading tea leaves. But to each their own.

Meh i heard that same stuff when i said that Iggy would not want to re-sign last summer. I don't think posters realise how much winning is a priority to North American born players, especially to players like Cammi that could play top 6 on any team in the league.

Just to state the obvious - but, the captain of your team does not have to be the most skilled player. If he is someone who works hard, has the respect of the lockerroom, and the ability to communicate with the coach and/or the refs then it really doesn't matter if he is a top line player that is carrying the team to the W or a 3rd line guy who makes his impact through grit and hard work.
Most of what Gio (or any captain) brings to a team is not something that we will see as fans that tune in to watch games and then tune out.

Le me play devil's advocate......on paper this team IMO is not as bad as most pundits are making it out to be....the big question is in net.
Hudler, Cammy, Stajan, Stempniak, Glencross, Monahan, Baertschi, Galiardi, D. Jones,
Gio, Wideman, Brodie
There are decent NHL players on this team. They are much faster and bigger now and that will help them against teams like LA, SJ, and VAN. I still think and know they are better than the Oilers.
The Iginla factor is gone. The dressing room moral and chemistry will be totally different.
Lets see where this plays out. I would be more shocked if they finish in the bottom 3 than if they make the playoffs.
If the team is good, maybe Cammy stays.

Get ready to be really shocked.
And yes this team is as bad as most "pundits" make it out to be. Your list of players except Cammi are all 2b/3a players. The 3 D-men you mentioned are all 2nd pairing guys.
