One thing that differentiates the potential for these players is that Jones is almost a year older than MacKinnon and Barkov. As to whether the Avalanche are lying, I'd say it could be some disinformation where they enjoy playing with other teams plans.

Driving the trade value up for the 1st overall pick. Maybe FLA is getting more attention with the likelihood that Nate MacKinnon could be had at #2.

To say to other teams that if you want to move up to get Mackinnon, you'll have to move up to #1.

Crazy, crazy suggestion.
But if somehow in some way Jones tumbled all the way down to us, would you take him? (no way in hell he would though right?)

I think the Avs are looking to see just how crazy of an offer someone is willing to throw at them. And the only way to do that is to make people think they are taking MacKinnon.
Edit: I also think MacKinnon is the better choice,I am only responding to those questioning why they would announce this.

Gm meetings conveniently start tomorrow. Timing of this leak of info is pretty obvious. You guys who posted that this is an attempt to drive up the price, you more than likely right.

I have been as anti-Jones as anyone, but at #6? Hell yes.
Re-unite Jones and Wotherspoon and wait until next year to get the #1 C

Here is a suggestion.
What if FLA really wants Mackinnon but COL is bluffing. The Avs fishing for additional assets while still getting Jones. ie FLA trades up to 1st overall.

Sakic is just trying to up the price of the first overall. Florida will not pay a hefty price to get Mackinnon if the avs have closed shop on the 1st overall

A former scout I talked to thinks Nurse will be better than Jones when all's said and done. wouldn't be totally shocked to see him go 5th

This reminds me of Feaster's press conference. I found that at the start of the presser he was straight to the point and kept the BS to a minimum or none at all. Once it came to talking about 22 and 28 - he went into BS mode and said "we really really really like our late 1st round picks too!!"
Add me to the camp that believes this is posturing.
Using language like "IF we pick first" sounds more encouraging than the usual "We'll listen to all offers for 1st overall" IMO

What if the Avs just want to be "forced" to take jones? They leak an intent to take a forward (McKinnon) because they want to increase the pressure on Florida to trade up. So the panthers offer a 2nd to switch. The Avs say ok and add a second round pick.
Then maybe they can dangle the jones pick to TB or NSH depending if TB is loving nuchushkin for a similar deal and pick up another asset. They have traded down twice and end up picking Drouin, who Roy wanted all along, all while adding two more valuable assets to the fold.
Not suggesting this will actually happen, but perhaps this is the dream scenario the Roy has built up and sold to Sakic.

Doesn't hurt to have other options at that #1C plus Jankowski still needs 2-3 yrs.

Why are people so surprised that Avs would announce this?
Remember 2008? Bolts weren't quiet about who they'd pick.
"Seen Stamkos?" Anyone?

If Avs pick Nate, then it'll be Statsny that gets traded. RoR isn't eligible to be traded until probably after this upcoming season's trade deadline.
