While surprising that they would not go for the hometown kid who fills the biggest need on the roster, MacKinnon is the BPA in this draft so I can understand why they would lean that way. But man, they would be more or less forced to trade a guy like Stastny.
MacKinnon, Duchene, O'Reilly, Stastny. Talk about an embarrassment of riches.
The thing I don't understand is why they would announce this unless it was some kind of posturing to stir the pot/create hype/throw other teams off.

If I'm wrong, throw all the crow my way, I'll eat it. But I'm telling you, almost everything out there being discussed/written about the draft, indicate Jones will be taken 1st. Hometown kid, best D-man in the draft by a large margin (arguably the best player, regardless of position) with Colorado desperately needing help on D, and he's a very marketable guy for a team with the 5th worst attendance last year. He's going to be an Av, no question.

God ... something crazy is going to happen causing that stupid 3 minute inability of Carolina to hold a lead to be the reason we miss out on Barkov, and I'm going to smash my TV.

Good for the Flames as they have much more time to put together plan B. I thought for months now that Jones was a sure thing to go to the Avalanche but with the change of management/coach and Jones supposedly not wowing scouts at the combine in the interviews I'm really not all that surprised as MacKinnon down the stretch simply separated himself from the pack. A defenseman sure makes more sense for the Avalanch but MacKinnon will render one or two of their other young guys as tradable assets for defensive help.
The Flames can not move on to trying to trade up for Barkov (doubtful unless they severely overpay to which I don't know if he is worth that) or simply use their three picks on some really good looking players.

He's bluffing. They are driving the trade value up on teams like the Flames. Trying to create a panic. "Those 3 forwards"? As if they don't know already who they are drafting.

It's just posturing to up the ante for any potential trades but it wouldn't shock me if they take MacKinnon. Let's face it, everyone wants MacKinnon and I'm sure by the volume of calls Colorado is receiving, it's making them then twice about Seth.
Regardless what happens, I think we'll be out of the action and should be prepared to take whoever is left at #6.

In a way, it makes sense - defenceman take a few years to fully understand the game at the NHL level. By taking MacKinnon, they can trade Duchene or Stastny for an established defenceman and come out ahead.

My personal list goes Mackinnen, Barkov, Druoin, then Jones.
So I'm not surprised at all. If I were the Avs, I would pick Nate too.

Any team with interest in building a cup contender should take note that Carolina is the only cup winner like ever without a franchise stud dman.

I don't think they are bluffing. They will likely take Mackinnon and trade Stastny.

Sakic and their management are morons.
Doing EXACTLY what the Oilers are doing / have done, and what's kept them looking worse than us at the end of each season.
So stubborn and letting the intrigue of more goal scoring (when they don't need it) deflect them from the right decision for the team. Jones would be on cloud nine to play for that club, too.
Shame.

I've posted it before but Centers are much safer bets at the top of the draft over the past decade
I would imagine Stastny is moved definitely now, and who knows if their issues with ROR are fixed
but a 1-2 of MacKinnon/Duchense has great potential down the middle
they have other assets to get a solid D

I think it is posturing.
The interest, league-wide, seems to be for MacKinnon. If the Avs are perceived to be leaning towards Jones, it gives Florida all of the power.
I think the Avs are looking to see just how crazy of an offer someone is willing to throw at them. And the only way to do that is to make people think they are taking MacKinnon.
Edit: I also think MacKinnon is the better choice, I am only responding to those questioning why they would announce this.

Its riches for this year but going forward not so much. My friend is a die hard Av's fan and has been saying for months that if Stastny is not traded this summer that he will be traded at the deadline. I have heard this also in the media.
Before the O'Reilly offer sheet the two sides were not exactly cordial during the process. There is a good chance that the Av's will be looking to trade ROR by the deadline also. Those are 2 centers that at the deadline will bring back some nice assets.
Not sure why the announced it, but if anything they might have just made Barkov's stock rise.

Sure, fine. But look at their organizational strengths. Also, why would they ever come out publicly and say this? Taking a page out of feasters playbook.

Well that explains why the Flames offered 3 first round picks for the first overall pick. If the Avs are taking MacKinnon and have indicated that privately between clubs, it gives more reason to the flames pitch if MacKinnon is their guy they want.
