Because an good young goalie with the potential to be an elite goalie is something the team desperately needs with its current guy retiring. Would you rather draft fucale at 22 or get Bernier for a 2014 2nd?

Except it's going to cost a lot more than that.

Kings fans on HF wanted Baertschi.

I was speaking in terms of throwing an offer sheet at him. Obviously you say no if you have to give up anything significant for him; in a world where Mike Smith is a free Agent, bryzgalov will probably be available, nick backstrom is a ufa... There are decent stopgaps if they wanted to go that direction.

Bernier is the biggest boom candidate available though.

Icon35 Sources: Islanders in the mix for Kings' Jonathan Bernier

Quote:
The Islanders are in the mix for Kings goaltender Jonathan Bernier, according to several sources.

The Kings are only seeking prospects or young players in return, not looking for current costly regulars.

It is believed that Islanders GM Garth Snow has had preliminary conversations with Lombardi. The Kings GM called around the league to gauge the market for Bernier last week, according to TSN's Pierre Lebrun.

Why do we desperately need a "potentially" elite goalie now, when CGY is 4-5 years away from being competitive? Waste of resources.

MacDonald kind of fits as a stop gap, but Bernier is a huge step in a part of rebuilding this team. Better then both unproven "best goaltender not in the NHL" ... if we can get Bernier for a 2nd, or one of our best goaltender not in the NHL, do it.
Agreed, only caution is that there are examples of promising goalies being ruined by being on crap teams attempting to build. Remember Pascal Lecaire? One of the many great young Quebec goalies coming up, ending up in Columbus wrecked his career.

The difference here is that Bernier's alll ready for full time duty. No luxury to season him in the minors for a couple of seasons, while the skaters improve. The Flames roster is going to be composed of kids mixed in with vet rejects. Not the best environment for a goalie to flourish. In fact, it's going to be very frustrating for whomever ends up with the job.

If LA wants young prospects/picks for Bernier I definitely say pass. I wouldn't mind picking him up, but not at the cost of what this franchise needs the most right now.

Not really concerned as LA will find the best deal for Bernier, but if the Flames for one second even consider drafting Fucale at 28 they would be better off trading that 1st to LA for Bernier than drafting Fucale. That's only if they are thinking goalie at 22 or 28. Then once that trade is done someone please tell Jay we would like to thank Jay Feaster for his contributions to the Calgary Flames, but the Calgary Flames have chosen a new direction.......

I think Bernier is better and will be better than Fucale.

Granted i think they go with Ramo, Berra and McDonald next year.
LA would match that offer in a second then deal with the finances afterward. An offersheet only works if it is massively overvalued.

I think we have way too many goalie prospects right now. We need to give them a shot before we make a move like that. It would be a waste to throw a draft pick away considering how weak the team is up front and on the back end.

If all it took was a 28th overall pick then Bernier would have been traded by now. In the above Islanders rumour it mentions they are looking for prospects and/or young roster players. I will bow my head in shame if the Kings get less value than a 28th overall draft pick.

I don't think it would take very much to make the contract out of the Kings reach. With how tight they are to the cap and with two of their young Dmen needing to be re-signed this summer (where both of them are likely to get a good raise)... Even if the contract is just $3.2M the Kings would have to think pretty hard before signing a contract that would keep a backup goaltender that doesn't want to be there.

Can you put a NMC on an offersheet? That would certainly spice things up.

Makes sense. LA has no first round pick - traded 27th pick to CBJ.

That is a stiff price for Bernier. Definitely do not want the Flames paying that.

According to a team source, the Flyers have been involved in trade talks with Los Angeles for goaltender Jonathan Bernier for more than a week, and they're among a group of finalists in the running for his services. Kings general manager Dean Lombardi has gathered offers from as many as 12 teams, according to the source, but the field has been whittled down to approximately seven contenders.

The hot rumor at the Stanley Cup finals is that the Flyers are dangling forward Matt Read and a draft pick to obtain Bernier's rights. That could not be confirmed.

So, the Flyers' apparent plan would be to throw Bernier in an inexpensive tandem with fellow 24-year-old Steve Mason and let them compete. Clearly, the Flyers aren't ready to hand over the reins to Mason, who was spectacular in his six-start audition in April.

While some observers are concerned that Mason may struggle working in a tandem with such a young competitor, it's important to point out that Mason and Bernier backstopped Team Canada together to a gold medal at the 2008 World Junior Championships. Giroux, Luke Schenn and Wayne Simmonds were also on that team.

If the price for Bernier is too high, however, the Flyers do appear to have a backup plan. Ray Emery has piqued the interest of the Flyers' brass as a Plan B. Emery, 30, is Corey Crawford's backup for the Blackhawks. The two shared the Jennings Trophy last week for posting the league's best goals-against average this season.

I still expect Kings to trade Bernier. With Kiprusoff on last edge, expect Flames to pursue. (Stick tap to @JoshRimerHockey on Bryz news)

David Pagnotta ‏@TheFourthPeriod 1h
As we reported back around deadline, Bernier & Read were centerpieces of trade talks bw PHI/LA. Flames, Leafs, NJ, Wild could all be in mix

Now I for one do not expect the Flames to pursue Bernier as heavily as some other teams. I thoroughly believe they want to hand the reigns over to Ramo and Berra and see which one steps up to win. I would be surprised if the Flames got Bernier with the goalie log jam they have at the moment.

Bernier would clear that log jam right out.
