This draft is supposedly awesome. Good time to have 3 firsts.

Funnily enough, the second half of the 1st round that year was arguably better than the first half. Kessler, Perry, Getzlaf, Parise, Richards, Burns all drafted after 15.

I just looked up the Wikipedia page for that draft.
I almost cried when I saw the players that we could have had.
First round (Selected Phaneuf 9th overall) - Jeff Carter (11), Dustin Brown (13), Brent Seabrook (14), Zach Parise (17), Ryan Getzlaf (19), Mike Richards (24), Corey Perry (28)
Second round (Selected Ramholt 39th overall) - Patrice Bergeron (45), Matt Carle (47), Shea Weber (49)
Hell, even Joe Pavelski was a 7th round pick at 205th overall.
I know hindsight is 20/20, but still.

two 1st round picks 12th and 26th
myers and ennis
st louis 2010
two 1st round picks 14th and 16th
schwartz and tarasenko
st louis 2007
three 1st round picks 13th 18th and 26th
eller, cole, and perron
st louis 2006
two 1st round picks 1st and 25th
johnson and berglund
washington 2006
two 1st round picks 4th and 23rd
backstrom and varlomov
and lastly a deep draft in 2004
washington three 1st round picks 1st 27th and 29th
ovechkin, schultz, and green
while hoarding 1st round picks is far from a certainty, there's a right way to do what we're doing. we just have to hope they get it done.

Rico Fata was 15 years ago. As much as we've sucked, we probably should let that go one of these years.

I'm not very excited about Pitt's draft pick, 30th overall is pretty much a crap shoot no matter how deep the draft might be. Shawn Belle (???) went 30th in 2003, we need to package that pick plus st louis' or another roster player to move up.

Get over that ####. If Feaster has shown he has some competency in anything the last two years, it's drafting. Sven, Gaudreau, Wotherspoon, Granlund, Sieloff, Gilles, Brossoit and Jankowski are all very nice prospects. In all the years under Sutter, we never had more than two guys to be legitimately excited about.
I hate posts like this so much.

I think the reason this one still stings is because I'm certain Phaneuf is still a Flame if Weber is his partner.

Combining 1st's
I think the key to a rebuild has to be to get two top prospects as fast as possible. So regardless of how many Jay 1sts tries to cash in it comes down to using our first which will be a top 4 pick and trading our other two firsts for an upgrade pick to get into the top 5 again. My ideal would be getting Seth Jones and Drouhin but I think no GM can screw up when they have the two in the top four or five. If St Louis blows it under the Bouwmeester curse then it isn't too bad to defer a first to the next year for balance. I just hope Jay has learned his lesson in going "off the board" in last years draft but I fear he and Weisbrod are a bit too cocky about their knowledge of "off the board" prospects. They blew two chances at Olli Matta to get Jankowski. In the deal with Pittsburgh they couldn't get near Matta again. Live and learn. DONT GO OFF THE BOARD UNLESS YOU HAVE DETROIT"S SCOUTING STAFF!!!!

The Rico Fata thing, those scouts are long gone. this is a whole new batch of scouts, and the last two drafts appear on paper to be very good so I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt going into this draft. Weisbrod and company are good at drafting.

Ill be pretty pissed if Glencross were traded for anything less than a top 10 pick. Hes a good player to have around, someone has to play the games and we are already a bottom 5 team + no iggy/bouw. We dont need to get much worse now.

You are implying that Maatta would be a better prospect to have than Jankowski.
If there is anything that I loved about last year's draft, is that the Flames intensively scouted someone who could potentially be a 6'4" extremely talented 1st line center - 'franchise center'.
Olli Maatta - projects to be a #3 defencemen tops.
I actually really liked this 'gamble'. In the last re-rankings that scouts were asked to do, Jankowski did indeed belong in the 1st round. He had pretty good numbers on a fairly lousy team in Providence for a freshman, as well as being the youngest player in the draft last year, having to deal with a huge growth spurt, jumping from a very poor level of play and systems into an NCAA program... Jankowski has done amazingly well, and I for one am extremely happy with this selection. There was nobody left on board when the Flames announced they were trading down that had this much upside - loads of skill and size to boot.
Prospect wise, I would much rather have Jankowski than Maatta, that's for sure, especially when you look at the organizational lack of 'blue-chip' prospects.

The big thing is that people seem ready to call the latest round of prospects huge successes when basically none of them have even stepped up to the pro ranks yet. Its at least been an improvement but there needs to be some actual evidence before getting overconfident in the current stable of players.
The good thing is that with so many high picks, it drastically improves the teams chances of selecting one or two high impact players for once.

Well except for Tod Button. That man must have something on the Flames organization that is keeping his job safe.

Look at all the first rounders by the blues. All they need is Bouw to tie that roster together.
