This.
You know Costco will never open an express aisle because it's totally against their business model. They don't want to encourage people driving up, taking a parking spot and grabbing a couple of things. They want you there for hours.

Costco needs to wake the eff up and have an express lane. Idiots. I will never sign up for your stupid american express card until you do.

Costco in kalispell has self serve checkouts that are rarely used. If you don't have alcohol you can get through pretty quick.

I can't really complain about Costco when I can get Gears of War 3 for $20 there.
Oh yeah and foodstuffs too. The Port Coquitlam one isn't so bad. Burnaby and Vancouver though... forget it.

Parking always sucks, but I haven't found the line-ups to be excessive. The cashiers are pretty efficient.
What does irk me are the people around the store that make beelines for free samples of anything. Christ, it's a Dixie cup of dry cereal, it's not worth running over kids and pinning somebody with your shopping cart to a freezer to get at.
I like that the US ones have beer, but otherwise don't see any fantastic savings to shopping there vs a Canadian one. There is better variety of goods at other stores.

Americans bitching about Canadians going state side and dumping money into their ailing economy? Ridiculous.

I think that the intent of the article was to generate the same public outcry as the "NosehillGentlemen" article/letter did by highlighting some inane divisive issue between Americans and Canadians. I expect after this dies off of the pages from Calgary Sun and Herald that there will be something else. Probably some group that blames Canada for Obama's healthcare legislation.

My plan of attack when I have to go:
-Be there for the opening
-Know your Costco, and where everything you need is
-Doors open, grab cart or big orange cart
-Pass all the old people and others walking to the return area
-Rock and Roll like the grocery shopping superstar you are
-Damn near jog from spot to spot
-Hit the tills before a line has even had a chance to form
-Booya!
|
Or, you know, go at ~7:00 p.m. when it's dead.

Sounds about right. A year or two ago in Whitefish there were stickers plastered all over that said something along the lines of "Leave your money but keep your attitude" with a maple leaf in the background.

How much money do people save to make it worth it to drive to a Costco in the States for their shopping?

This is in Bellingham, and most of the shoppers would be from Surrey, Delta, Langley, etc. About a 45 minute drive according to Google Maps, probably no different than driving across the city in traffic to get to Costco (in Calgary)

In Calgary I go at 8 on a weeknight and I never have a problem getting in an out quick. I am not there to fill my stomach with free samples.
My only complaint about them is that is if you like something you need to buy alot of it because it might not be there next week, goes for everything; food, furniture, etc

The best days to shop at Costco are Tues to Thursdays anytime, those are USUALLY the slowest days of the week. Never ever shop on the weekends UNLESS you go when the store opens because it can get pretty hectic throughout the day especially on Saturdays.
With kids going back to school, the weekends will be even more crazier than usual, so going on a weekday is probably better.

Avoid Costco in the city entirely and either go to Okotoks or Balzac.
Places are always dead and they're just happy to see customers.
Heritage Meadows is one of the busiest Costco's in all of North America. Avoid it like the plague.

Wait, not only are these parasite communities stealin' our jerbs, you expect me to go to one of them and spend my Calgarian cash to support their satellite community lifestyle?
I THINK NOT!
