Professional women's player is a very loose term.
We both watch EPL and international soccer. It's the greatest spectacle in the world because the players are awesome.
Yes there's diving and conning of the ref but most of the time, the refs are onto it and the player (Suarez) just looks like an idiot and he is the only person in the ENTIRE Olympics in any sport that gets booed.

I think there a lot more cheap shots and lack of respect in professional sports than you care to admit. Soccer certainly isn't immune to it (Rooney and Ronaldo at the World Cup comes to mind).

Does she get paid for playing? Do people pay to go watch (ok not a lot but apparently enough). She gets paid to play a sport she is a professional. She is at the very top league and level for her sport. It may not be nearly the same as men's football but she is a professional.
The Flames matter only to us lol just like Canada matters to us so we are discussing how we feel they got hosed. Dismissing it just because it's Women's football for the only every 4 years Olympics and you feel it's amateurish is really a moot point since in the end you can say the same thing about all sports. I think more people around the world would remember this event more than our non-goal from 04.
Amateur ref or not doesn't really matter. There have been thousands of top level women's football games and that call is basically never called and I have no doubt the slow down tactic is used in almost everyone of those games where someone is leading. But ok she was influenced and made the call since it's "technically" a rule. Then to follow with that handball call was unforgivable. You already made a super controversial call then to make an even worse one right after? Fail. If you compare that handball compared to the non handball call on an American earlier in the game in the penalty area I think everyone would have called the American over the Canadian American every time.

Apparently the US leads the "real" medal count. Stupid China and their "fake" medals.

I think the 6 second rule is never called because professional goalies know it and release the ball quickly once it's in their hands. You often see men keepers throw the ball onto the ground or outside of their box and then kick it. It's not even an issue.
What's McLeod bouncing the ball for?
The handball call was bogus. There were no outstretched arms.
|
The calls leading to the PK were suspect for sure. The problem I have with all the whining is it wasn't a golden goal.
There were still 40 plus minutes for Canada to win. And it is really sour grapes from Sinclair to say there was biased officiating against Canada from the start of the match.
It was a iffy call just like there have always been and will continue to be in sport. Move on, and win the bronze.

The US Women's soccer has been for years one of the most arrogant, wholly unlikable teams in all of sports. Insanely arrogant, classless and a whole bunch of talk from a team ranked #1 who hasn't won the world title in well over a decade. Hope Solo is clearly the queen of the classless but their whole team exudes it. Even if they win this tournament it won't make up for their choke job to Japan in the World Cup last year. If Alex Morgan wasn't on the team there would be literally nothing good to come from that team.

Two Canadians in the high jump, a medal would be a surprise though.

Wrong. Soccer refs are held more accountable than just about any other refs in the world. If they mess up big, they are dropped a division or never again selected for any of the big matches/tournaments.

The high jump is a really fun event to watch. Everyone gets 3 tries at each height.
and it's starting to rain hard at the stadium

I've often wondered how/when someone gets involved in athletics.
I can understand running, but how does someone end up being a shot putter? or doing the pole vault? How young would you have to be to know or start training for such events?

McLeod was playing with fire.

Sure, but there isn't a goaltender on earth that would expect that call in that situation. A warning from the ref, sure. A yellow card if the ref is in a bad mood, okay. But that? You can't accuse McLeod of "playing with fire" over a call that nobody on earth calls.
That was a ref who was out of her element and who was intimidated by Wambach. Legitimate strategy on her part, but as gutless as diving, really.

I agree. Give McLeod a yellow card in the first half and she's releasing that ball like ants in her pants.

Mostly through school I think. You have some decent success early on or a teacher who sees something in you and encourages you to try.

fatass = shot put, no-ass = high jump?
I say this only because I just saw a Qatari guy with absolutely no ass graze the bar with his no ass and the bar didn't fall
