I used to get "lifetime suspension" bans all the time, even though they were only for a month or two at a time. Got everyone's hopes up that I was gone for good, when really it is just that I don't think Ken knows how the "in the sin bin" function works. (kidding, please don't ban me!)

To one degree or another yes, or at least on the other forums of about this size that I visit. They have people that return continuously under new names and such. Some have delayed registration (i.e. a Mod has to approve the new account) and do IP checks and stuff.

But pretty much every forum I've been to has the "banned x who was returning poster x' who was returning poster x'' who was returning poster x''' who was.." problem.

Yeah, focusing on mobile phones might be better, limits the pool of available options to re-register.

I was thinking of an SMS gateway type thing where it would send an SMS with a verification code, but the other direction might work too.

Wonder if we could sell it as a service.

The system would probably need to log all of the IP addresses that a user logged in from, so they just don't start logging in from phone or work or home after they get banned.

Actually, we could do the texting too. We just launched the Transit SMS service, so this would be a piece of cake. In theory it would be possible to give the option for text or voice to a user as they register. There would be a small third party cost to the texting, but it could probably be sponsored. You're right, could be a very interesting service.

Just to address this; there are often two reasons for this:

1) A user will sometimes successfully appeal a suspension.

2) More frequently, one of us will choose the wrong suspension. The two different types are a result of a hack Photon put in there. So the default option when we ban says "Move user to the 'banned users' list." For the temporary suspensions we have to remember to change 'banned users' to 'temporary suspensions' list.

However I do accept your challenge Cecil; and will be sure to choose wisely the next time I ban you.

Blair Jones cost the team the game

More on topic, it seems to be more of a maturity thing when it comes to multiple accounts. My experience with users who form new accounts after bannings are either there to strike back at the forum in some form (my personal favourite was a kid who returned purely to actively break as many rules as possible before getting outed) or have returned more reasonable and have actually learned their lesson. While more of the former seems to exist, there are examples of the latter. Maybe it's just worth keeping the system as is?

I can't imagine the time spent and the huge annoyance it is to deal with constantly returning banned posters. If there is a way to avoid this for the moderating team then I am all for it.

If a guy is banned and wants to return, he needs to be mature about it, sit back and understand why he was banned and ask for a 2nd chance.

There was one particular guy who I banned by IP on the Manitoba Moose forum (he was several degrees more annoying than anyone else on the boards). He started creating fake accounts and posting at the library. He was so bad, I had to ban the Winnipeg Public Library to get rid of him.

Yeah I had to ban a big chunk of the Edmonton School Board (can't remember if it was Catholic or Public) once, whoever it was was posting gay porn and stuff.

We're still getting some nasty emails (trying to fool us to go to see tubgirl), though I don't know who it is in this case.

Quick question. If we go the SMS or call-in route, how does that affect those of us who are outside North America? The phone system here in Costa Rica is so archaic, I need to talk to a real operator to make a call to outside the country. I don't even know if I could send a text to Canada. Just something to consider.

Yeah that's something to consider. Most people out of NA though don't go through the effort to register just to troll so maybe not necessarily applicable for some countries.
