Still getting profanity laced emails from Beerfest.. kind of beyond anger and getting into mental health issues at this point.

Apparently I went to school with him. If he is the guy I think he is then he always seemed a little 'off'.

How's he sending the e-mails? I'd think with vBulliten, you can IP ban or something...

If it helps at all...from what I can tell, he'd be a year or two ahead of you.

I do have to say, that is hilarious and I have to admire his tenacity. I wish I got semi-crazed emails written to me by sociopathic madman. It'd be like a badge of honour commemorating all that I've done right with my life.

You can, though one has to be careful with that as you don't want to ban contributing members as well and sometimes IPs are either shared (especially now with lots of mobile browsers) or they do change sometimes and there have been times when some new person randomly gets a previously banned IP.

IP addresses are becoming less useful for that kind of thing in the past few years.

I sometimes wonder if it would be a good thing to have a drastic change where real identity became part of membership.. either requiring a tie-in of a facebook account, or requiring a verification of a mobile phone # as part of registration, or some such.

Or maybe allow anonymous membership, but "verified" members get something extra, like the ability to up/downvote posts or something like that.

But that might be too drastic a change and might cut down membership but an order of magnitude

Anyway, I ramble...

The same reason anyone gets banned, not following the rules well enough

I'd almost think that his account was hacked. His posts seemed fairly reasonable and normal, and then suddenly became kind of a jerk.

Yes yes and yes.

A cell number tie in would be perfect, I wouldn't mind at all, and I think if a new poster was genuine they wouldn't either.

Of course Beerfest is probably so obsessed he would go out and buy 7-11 prepaid phones, but that's another issue all together.

Thing about a cell phone tie-in is it doesn't affect being anonymous to other posters, just to the forum software.

Might have to think about this one, obviously not something easy to do, but might be something actually marketable to other vBulletin or forum sites.

Speaking of which, how do other sites manage banned posters? Is everywhere like CP? By that I mean, do other sites have problems screening returning banned posters?

I could give you out-of-band authentication where you get a pin number upon registering and have to call a number from a valid phone and enter the pin number. Of even validate off the DNIS digits of the mobile phone. Lots of techy options to play with!

Puckluck had mood swings. He'd be ok for a day or two, then just do drive-bys and other such nonsense. In hockey terms, he wasn't very consistent.
