How is that even possible? The waterpark is awesome and they just added a bunch of thrill slides. The roller coaster is always fun. Bourbon Street is a great time. Bowling is fun. Good stores for shopping.

It's too bad they dropped the segway tour earlier this year. A very hungover group of us did that tour in February and had a blast.

I live close to Edmonton after living in Calgary for about 25 years

The good

Golfing is way cheaper and you can get on on weekends
You can golf until 10:45 in the middle of summer easily
Has a nice ring road

I dislike WEM because it's too damn busy. Parking is brutal, and it's flat out too big. I couldn't find my way around that place if I had to. Never mind wanting to go to stores that are on the complete opposite ends of each other. I haven't been to Galaxyland in probably 20 years, and the Waterpark in probably 10. It's just not a place I go to very often at all.

The university area is nice. You will be fine there for university.

Whyte Ave is tolerable, but much like parts of Calgary, when you have a group of nightclubs or pubs together, you end up with some meat heads. A lot of fun the rest of the time though.

Ignore the sports radio up here. Don't even bother.

CP will be really important for news.

For the same reason why every citizen hates the really touristy areas in their city: its always packed to the tits with out of towners everywhere. That and whenever anyone comes up to visit you, guess where they want to go? Every...single...time.

I loved the mall too before I lived here. Moved here in '05, I f'ing HATE it now, its just one massive tourist trap. Avoid at all costs, especially on the weekend. Parking is an absolute nightmare.

Not with regular receivers inside the city. If you have an antenna attached to your stereo unit, maybe.

Also, if you get Telus TV you can pick up Fan960 through your tv (which was an unexpected bonus).

As for the OP, believe it or not there actually are some really nice areas in this city. As mentioned already, the river valley/Whyte Ave area is nice, and perfect for someone like you who's coming to attend university. Young, hip, artsy crowd, with some really good bars/shops in the area. The deep south side is also nice, actually reminds me a lot of Calgary when I'm down there, I find I even get kind of homesick when I'm visiting my buddy on that end of the city.

That said, there are also some crap areas. Beware the N.E., and the West End especially around the mall area. Unless you like getting stabbed or want to be a gang banger. And Mill Woods in the deep S.E. of course is also to be avoided, but I'm sure past newspaper headlines already taught you that.

I don't love living here like some of our other transplanted CP'ers, but I actually don't mind it, more than I probably let on in previous posts. It's still a decent city with some picturesque spots and a decent nightlife. I find people laid back here too, more of a blue collar town so it doesn't have that snobbiness you can sometimes find in Calgary the last few years. And remembering my single days, I swear its easier to pick up here, the senoras are more laid back too. You'll be fine.

PS- Oh, just a disclaimer: driving here sucks. Like, SUCKS. The roads all simultaneously go under construction every summer (on a much larger scale than Calgary) so its actually quicker getting around in the winter believe it or not. And never speed. There's cops everywhere, its like the gestapo. Got 4 tickets my first year here, after previously 6 years ticket-free in Calgary/Vancouver. That and the LRT system is beyond a joke (especially if you live North side), services about 20% of the city, so you're pretty much forced to drive if you live outside university/river valley/downtown core. Know those things, and you'll be fine.

Why do you guys continue with the hyperbole? It makes you look dumb. You keep bringing up stabbings as if it's an every day occurrence. Do you think it's rare to NOT be stabbed here or something? Seriously, knock off the stupid crap like that because you know it isn't true anyways.

Dude that's what happens when you're the murder capital of Canada. It gets you a bad rep. Places are known for their stereotypes in other cities (just like how I'm sure on Oilers boards, when talking about Calgary theres probably lots of cowboy/hick talk when in reality its quite a corporate city), and with all the murders here in recent years, that's just the stereotype its developed unfortunately.

You're also on a rival board so of course you're gonna hear that stuff. Is it exaggerated? Of course, but what stereotype isn't? And is there not a growing problem with stabbings/murders in this city the last few years?

There is 10x the crap here as on all the Edmonton sites combined. I've lived in Edmonton and area for over 50 years and love it. Edmonton has a lot going for it. I love Calgary, too. One city isn't better than the other; they're just different. If I ever came back to Calgary, maybe I'd start a thread: "I'm moving to Calgary; please help me not to get arrogant."

When you guys stop stabbing and murdering each other, and quit burning down your phone booths, we'll stop mocking you for it.

We haven't had a riot in a while. I should start one tonight. I'll probably go all stabby as well. Maybe I'll stab some city worker in Claireview.

I almost got stabbed while going through the TIM HORTONS drive-thru this morning. No more stabbings. Please.

Theeeeere we go. I can feel my mind opening more and more.

To clarify, I do have some life experience before I move up there. I worked for a while before I started going to school, so I'm somewhat glad I'm not moving up there as a fresh-out-of-highschool 18 year old. I believe that'll help the acclimation somewhat.
