Stay away from White Ave. Unless you can fight really good...and like that kind of thing...and don't mind the odd stab and so forth...

I did an internship up there one summer. One thing Edmonton's got that could perhaps be viewed as something enviable, is a really good bike path system. And they still have a few Wee Book Inns, as I recall.

What the hell are you talking about? I work on Whyte Ave and pretty much go there anyways in my free time. I've never been stabbed.

I have never lived in Edmonton just visited on occasion. I like how it has very dense tree area's on the west side. It's like you are living right in the boreal forest.

Justin Bieber has visited the Hooters in West Ed Mall...so there's that.

I've lived in both Edmonton and Calgary for significant periods of time. The best things about Edmonton are the U of A, Whyte Ave (and all the awesome teeny restaurants/bars around there) and communities with actual character (I find most communities in Calgary are bland).
Truthfully, I sometimes wish I still lived in Edmonton but Calgary has Edmonton beat in one very important area - Calgary is a mecca for young professionals and career opportunities.

I moved from Calgary to Edmonton in January 2005 and then back to Calgary in August. I lived fairly close to Jasper and 109th. It's a decent area. If I had to live in Edmonton again I'd live a little more west of there and a little more north, but still a 10-20 minute walk from that corner.
Make sure you get underground, or at least covered, parking. It was the only place my car never started in the morning. The city is gross and ugly.

Shut off media at all times. If you must watch news, watch the National broadcasts, then shut off your TV. Local media blows (especially sports, where they treat it as a matter of when, not if, the young guns will win a Cup).
Don't trust the bus schedules...they seem to be much more inconsistent than Calgary Transit.
Avoid the entire area around the Royal Alex/Commonwealth. Serious...I'm kind of stuck living there...it just flat out sucks.
Whyte Ave is about the closest thing to a decent night life.

Well, Edmonton has one good mall but how many times can you go to the same mall?

Be tough now.
If I had to decide between Education and my future Prospects
And living in Edmonton
I might just pull on them coveralls, pick up a shovel and start digging ditches for minimum wage.

I lived up there for 4 years going to the U of A. Lived in residence (Lister Hall) for a couple years then moved down near Whyte and 112th. The University was great, as was Whyte ave and the surrounding community. I never needed a car up there and pretty much walked everywhere. Went down Whyte and to bars dozens of times and never really had any fights or serious violence to speak of.
That being said, there are plenty of bad neighbourhoods in Edmonton, but the only time I ended up there was for the occasional beer league hockey game.
If I were you I'd be excited to get out of the Hat and go to the U of A.

Thanks everyone for all the advice! I'm sure it won't be all bad up there... But I do quite like the hat. There isn't a whole lot to do, but the city is nice and the people are excellent. I really hope Edmontonians are good people too. It seems more than a few people lived in the vicinity of Whyte Ave, so I think I'll look into the area.

Edmonton is a hole, but the mall is a blast. People who don't like indoor amusement parks and insane waterslide parks are no fun. If they sold condos in WEM my wife and I would buy a vacation property there. We love it.
But yeah, Edmonton itself is nasty. Last month when we drove in there I just entered the city limits when a piece of Edmonton swill attacked and latched onto my radio antenna. It was so Edmonton of that to happen.

^ the best thing about West Ed is the T&t supermarket and the prepared foods they have there. Kicks the Calgary one's ass.
Good thing that is the only advantage Edmonton has over Calgary.
Sucker!

It's nothing special.. plus it's always crowded and you end up waiting half an hour in line for a $10 average burger
