I think the days of massive world wars like that are over, because our technology has just become too advanced. With the threat of nuclear strikes in everyone's minds, I can't see too many G8-type countries directly attacking each other on a large scale, in terms of invasions, etc like how it used to.
On a side note, had a prof talk about the subject in the OP recently, he was saying he thinks in 100 years when they go back and study us, they'll be blown away at how much $$$ & resources we wasted. I wish I could remember more in detail what he had said because it was a very interesting talk. Basically his take was that economically things will be a lot worse and they'll look back on us as a very spoiled & glutonous society.
